Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Electrical Engineer
Verify your credential matches the role
CBP officers assess whether your electrical engineering degree aligns with the specific duties listed in your offer letter. A degree in electronics or computer engineering may qualify, but your employer's job description must explicitly reflect that field.
Target employers with cross-border project history
Canadian and Mexican engineers already working in U.S.-linked infrastructure, energy, or manufacturing sectors are familiar with TN visa logistics. Focusing your search on firms with existing cross-border operations shortens the sponsorship conversation significantly.
Get your offer letter written for CBP review
Your employer's offer letter must state your job title as Electrical Engineer, describe duties tied to that specialty occupation, confirm the start date, and specify the period of employment. Vague or HR-generic letters are the most common reason CBP asks follow-up questions.
Search for TN-sponsored roles using Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for TN visa sponsorship, so you're not manually screening postings that exclude work authorization. Search by Electrical Engineer roles to find employers who have already committed to sponsoring TN applicants.
Understand how Mexican TN processing differs
Mexican nationals cannot use the CBP port-of-entry route and must apply at a U.S. consulate, which adds scheduling time. Factor in consulate wait times for your target start date and confirm your employer understands this timeline before accepting an offer.
Request a three-year TN period from the start
TN status can be granted for up to three years per entry. Ask your employer to specify a three-year employment period in the offer letter rather than a shorter term, reducing how often you need to renew and return to the border or USCIS.
Electrical Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Electrical Engineer qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Electrical Engineer is explicitly listed as a qualifying profession under the USMCA TN visa category. Your degree must be in electrical engineering or a closely related field, and your U.S. job duties must align with that specialty. CBP makes the final determination at the port of entry for Canadians, or at a consulate for Mexican nationals.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Electrical Engineers?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no lengthy USCIS petition process for border-crossing Canadians. H-1B visa selection is random and capped at 85,000 per fiscal year, meaning many qualified engineers go unselected. TN is renewable indefinitely in three-year increments, making it a practical long-term path for Electrical Engineers who qualify under USMCA.
What documents does an Electrical Engineer need for TN admission?
You need a valid Canadian or Mexican passport, a job offer letter from your U.S. employer that specifies your title, duties, salary, and employment period, and proof of your electrical engineering degree. Original transcripts or a credential evaluation letter are strongly recommended. CBP may also ask for a professional license if your role or state requires one.
Can I switch Electrical Engineer employers while on TN status?
You can change employers, but your TN status is tied to the original employer and role. Canadians can apply for a new TN at the port of entry with a new offer letter from the incoming employer. USCIS Form I-129 is required if you're changing employers without leaving the country. Starting the process before your last day with your current employer avoids a gap in authorized status.
How do I find Electrical Engineer jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job postings don't specify which visa types an employer will sponsor, which means you often apply before knowing if TN is on the table. Migrate Mate is built specifically for this: it surfaces Electrical Engineer roles where employers have already indicated TN visa sponsorship, so you can focus your applications on opportunities that match your immigration status from the start.
