Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Product Development Engineer
Match your degree to the role exactly
TN approval depends on a direct match between your engineering degree and the Product Development Engineer job duties. A mechanical engineering degree supporting a software-heavy product role can trigger a denial, so verify the alignment before applying.
Request a detailed support letter early
Your employer's TN support letter must describe your specific product development duties, not just your job title. Ask HR to include references to design, prototyping, or validation activities so CBP officers can confirm the role fits the Engineer category.
Target employers with active USMCA hiring history
Search employer visa filing history to find companies experienced with work visa sponsorship. Manufacturers, medical device firms, and consumer electronics companies with recent visa filings understand the sponsorship process already and may be open to supporting qualified candidates for TN status.
Use Migrate Mate to find roles at visa-sponsoring employers
Filter Product Development Engineer listings on Migrate Mate to surface employers with recent visa filings who may be open to sponsoring work visas. This cuts the back-and-forth of asking recruiters whether a company will support your visa sponsorship needs.
Prepare for Canadian border entry with complete documents
Canadian citizens can request TN status at a port of entry, but CBP officers review your full package on the spot. Bring your support letter, degree transcripts, and the offer letter together. An incomplete set means a same-day denial with no appeal.
Understand how role changes affect your TN status
If your product development scope shifts significantly after entry, such as moving from hardware to software product ownership, your existing TN may no longer cover the new duties. Coordinate with your employer before the transition, not after, to avoid a status gap.

Find Product Development Engineer JobsProduct Development Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Development Engineer role qualify for the TN visa?
Yes, provided the role falls under the Engineer occupational category defined by USMCA. The position must require at least a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline directly related to the work. Roles that blend engineering with general project management or business functions can face scrutiny if the engineering duties aren't the clear primary responsibility.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Product Development Engineers?
The TN visa has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadians, so you can start work as soon as CBP approves your entry. H-1B requires registration in March for an October start date and selection is not guaranteed. For Product Development Engineers with a qualifying degree and a U.S. job offer, TN is almost always the faster path if you're a Canadian or Mexican citizen.
Can I switch product development employers on a TN visa?
Yes, but the TN status is employer-specific. You cannot start work for a new employer under your existing TN. Canadians can request a new TN at a port of entry or by mail before changing jobs. Mexican citizens must schedule a new consular appointment. Plan the transition so there's no gap between your last day with the old employer and your new TN approval.
How can I find Product Development Engineer jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for roles with TN visa sponsorship. You can filter by job title and visa type to find employers who have confirmed they'll support the TN process, which saves time compared to asking individual recruiters whether sponsorship is available for each listing.
What documents do I need for a Product Development Engineer TN application?
You'll need a job offer letter specifying your title, duties, and employment terms, a support letter from your employer explaining how the role meets the USMCA Engineer category, and proof of your engineering degree. For Canadian citizens applying at the border, original transcripts or certified copies are strongly preferred. Mexican citizens also need a valid visa appointment at a U.S. consulate.
