Job Summary
The AD&D System Safety Engineer defines and leads system safety strategy for early‑phase aircraft and system concepts and is responsible for ensuring the safety and reliability of designs being developed by the Advanced Design & Development team. This role will focus on the initial phases of aircraft development—ideation, hypothesis generation, stakeholder engagement, technology maturation, and conceptual design. This role will develop safety‑driven architectures, allocate safety and reliability requirements, and establish re‑usable safety cases and analysis patterns that can be carried forward into detailed design and certification programs. This position involves acting as a safety architect and technical leader and collaborating with cross-functional teams, including aero, airframe, systems, software, and certification engineers as well as flight test, flight operations, and IT, to ensure that novel technologies and operating concepts can be matured into certifiable, operationally viable products.
This role will work with small, agile teams to explore new user value propositions, challenge the status quo, and evolve ideas into developed systems with validated architectures and requirements ready for detailed design and certification planning.
Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions
- Define AD&D safety engineering strategy, processes, and methods aligned with core Product Development’s System Safety and Systems Engineering practices.
- Conduct system safety analyses to support early development design decisions such as system architectures, availability, integrity, monitoring, and other safety requirements.
- Conduct and document Functional Decompositions.
- Conduct and document aircraft and system level safety analyses – specifically Aircraft Functional Hazard Assessments, Preliminary Aircraft Safety Assessments, System Functional Hazard Assessments, Preliminary System Safety Assessments, Particular Risk Assessments, Common Cause Assessments, and Particular Risk Assessments.
- Develop and review system schematics.
- Develop and validate reliability, maintenance, and safety requirements.
- Participate in trade studies and design reviews.

- Establish and maintain safety cases, including explicit documentation of assumptions, open issues, and certification risks for transition into development programs.
- Mentor and coach AD&D and Systems Engineers in safety driven design practices, including early phase use of ARP4754B/4761A and runtime assurance.
- Perform reliability analysis of electrical and/or mechanical assemblies using RIAC NPRD-2011, NSWC-11, RIAC Reliability Toolkit, and/or equivalent.
- Perform reliability analysis of electrical assemblies using MIL-HDBK-217-F2, RIAC NPRD-2011, RIAC Reliability Toolkit, and/or equivalent.
- Perform Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) of electrical and/or mechanical assemblies per MIL-STD-1629A, SAE ARP4761, RIAC FMD-2013, RIAC Reliability Toolkit, and/or equivalent.
- Support safety of flight determination for first flights.
- Identify Failure Modes and Effects Test (FMET) cases and support simulation and flight FMET.
- Review vendors’ reliability analysis and FMEA submittals for completeness and accuracy.
- Perform Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and common cause analyses (CCAs) of electrical and/or mechanical systems per SAE ARP4761.
- Development of tasks and procedures for flight crew and periodic maintenance requirements necessary for ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate closely with and support the work of system and software architects, systems development assurance, systems engineering, electrical and mechanical systems design, flight deck designers, human factors engineers, and flight test.
- Travel up to 25% may be required.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Safety Engineer
Verify your engineering credentials match TN requirements
TN classification requires a degree in engineering, not just a safety-adjacent field. A degree in occupational health or environmental science may not satisfy the requirement. Confirm your transcript reflects an accredited engineering discipline before applying.
Target employers with active safety compliance obligations
Construction, manufacturing, chemical processing, and utilities firms operate under OSHA-mandated safety programs that require dedicated Safety Engineers on staff. These employers file TN petitions regularly and understand the sponsorship process without needing education on it.
Get your professional certifications recognized across the border
Canadian and Mexican professional designations like P.Eng. or Ingeniero Civil are valued but not automatically equivalent to U.S. credentials. Prepare a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator to preempt employer or CBP questions about your qualifications.
Search TN-specific roles using Migrate Mate
Most general job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type, so you waste time on roles that won't support TN. Migrate Mate surfaces Safety Engineer openings where employers have recent visa filings and sponsorship experience, narrowing your search to real opportunities.
Confirm visa sponsorship willingness with your prospective employer early
For TN status, Canadian citizens can present documentation at the U.S. port of entry, while Mexican citizens apply through a U.S. consulate. No government pre-filing is required—your employer simply prepares a support letter demonstrating the role meets TN requirements (degree, job duties, salary). Clarify the process with HR at the offer stage so both you and the employer understand the straightforward steps ahead.
Prepare a role-specific support letter for Canadian port-of-entry entry
Canadians can obtain TN status directly at a land border or airport. CBP officers assess the role on the spot, so your employer's support letter must explicitly describe your Safety Engineer duties, required degree, and how the position meets TN specialty requirements.

Find Safety Engineer JobsSafety Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Safety Engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Safety Engineers qualify under the TN visa's Engineering occupational category. Your job offer must describe duties consistent with engineering practice, such as hazard analysis, process safety management, or regulatory compliance design. Roles framed primarily as safety coordination or inspection, without an engineering scope, may not satisfy CBP or USCIS requirements.
How does TN visa sponsorship for Safety Engineers compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual cap for Canadians and no lottery for either Canadians or Mexicans, so you're not competing for a limited pool of approvals the way H-1B applicants are. TN is also employer-tied but renews indefinitely in two-year or three-year increments, whereas H-1B has a six-year base limit before extension rules apply. The tradeoff is that TN does not allow dual intent, meaning it can't be used to pursue a green card concurrently.
How do I find Safety Engineer employers who will sponsor a TN visa?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employer visa sponsorship experience, so you can identify Safety Engineer roles at companies with recent visa filings. That sponsorship history signals an employer already understands the work visa process, which reduces delays and misunderstandings during the offer stage.
Can I change Safety Engineer employers on a TN visa?
Yes, but your TN authorization is employer-specific. Canadians can present a new support letter and credentials at a port of entry to switch employers. If you're already inside the U.S., your new employer needs to file an I-129 petition with USCIS before you begin work. You cannot start with the new employer until the new TN is approved or, for Canadians, granted at the border.
Does my Mexican engineering degree qualify for TN Safety Engineer status?
A Mexican engineering degree from an accredited institution generally satisfies the TN educational requirement, but consular officers and USCIS adjudicators may request a credential evaluation if the degree title doesn't clearly correspond to a U.S. engineering discipline. A NACES-approved evaluation prepared before your consular appointment at a U.S. embassy in Mexico can prevent a request for additional evidence from delaying your case.
