Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Materials Engineer
Align your degree field to the role
CBP officers verify that your degree in materials science, metallurgical engineering, or a closely related field directly supports the job duties. A mismatch between your credential and the posted role title is the most common TN denial trigger for engineers.
Build a detailed support letter with the employer
The employer support letter must name your exact job duties, the materials systems you'll work with, and why the role requires a materials engineering degree. Vague letters citing only job title and salary draw secondary inspection at the border.
Target manufacturers with active materials R&D programs
Aerospace, automotive, and semiconductor manufacturers routinely hire Materials Engineers and understand TN filing requirements. Searching by industry segment narrows your list to employers already set up to sponsor without internal policy roadblocks.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers actively sponsoring TN roles
Filtering by TN visa sponsorship history cuts out employers who will stall on legal review. Migrate Mate surfaces Materials Engineer roles where sponsorship is already confirmed, so you're targeting openings that can actually move to an offer.
Prepare for port-of-entry review as a Canadian applicant
You'll present your passport, support letter, degree credential, and the job offer at a U.S. land border or preclearance airport. CBP processes TN status the same day, but officers can request additional documentation, so bring your full credential package.
Clarify TN renewal timelines before accepting a contract role
TN status is granted in three-year increments with no cap on renewals, but contract positions that end before the TN expiry require a new employer letter and re-entry. Confirm your employer's renewal process before signing any fixed-term offer.

Find Materials Engineer JobsMaterials Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Materials Engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Materials Engineer is an explicitly listed occupation in the USMCA TN professional categories. Your job duties must involve materials development, testing, or process engineering requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in materials science, metallurgical engineering, or a directly related engineering discipline. Roles that blend general project management with incidental materials work may face closer scrutiny.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Materials Engineer positions?
The TN visa has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, meaning you can start a qualifying role at any point in the year. The H-1B selection rate has been well below 50% in recent years, and an unsuccessful lottery means a minimum one-year wait to reapply. For Canadian professionals with a materials engineering degree, the TN is a faster and more reliable path to U.S. employment.
Where can I find Materials Engineer jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles with TN sponsorship. You can filter by occupation, including Materials Engineer, to find employers who are already set up to support TN status rather than those still navigating whether they can sponsor at all.
What documents does a Canadian Materials Engineer need at the border?
You need a valid Canadian passport, an employer support letter describing your role and materials engineering duties, proof of your qualifying degree, and any professional credentials relevant to the position. CBP will review all documents at the port of entry and issue your I-94 the same day if everything is in order. Degree transcripts and a credential evaluation can help if your field of study is not immediately obvious from the diploma.
Can a Mexican Materials Engineer apply for TN status the same way as a Canadian?
No. Mexican citizens cannot apply at the port of entry and must schedule a TN visa interview at a U.S. consulate in Mexico. The documentation requirements are the same, but the process runs through the consular appointment system rather than CBP inspection. Processing times at the consulate vary by location and current appointment availability, so plan ahead before a role's start date.
