Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Electrical Controls Engineer
Verify your engineering credentials qualify
TN visa classification requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field. A controls-focused master's or a Canadian professional engineering license strengthens your case if your degree title doesn't map directly to 'electrical engineer.'
Target manufacturers with active automation programs
Automotive suppliers, semiconductor fabs, and food processing plants hire controls engineers regularly and are familiar with TN sponsorship. Filter job postings for roles listing PLC platforms like Allen-Bradley or Siemens, which signal a genuine specialty occupation need.
Get your job offer letter right
The offer letter must specify your exact title as 'Electrical Controls Engineer,' your degree requirement for the role, and that your employment is in a professional engineering capacity. A vague letter citing 'engineering support' has caused CBP delays at the border.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers who have actively filed TN petitions for engineering roles. This cuts the cold-outreach guesswork and connects you with companies that already understand the sponsorship process for controls engineers.
Prepare for CBP questions about controls versus IT
Border officers sometimes question whether PLC or SCADA work is engineering or IT. Bring documentation showing your role involves electrical system design and industrial process control, not software development, to distinguish your work clearly under the Engineer TN category.
Understand Mexican nationals' consular filing timeline
Mexican citizens must apply at a U.S. consulate, which requires scheduling an appointment and submitting your employer's petition documents in advance. Build at least four to six weeks into your start date planning to account for appointment availability.
Electrical Controls Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Electrical Controls Engineer qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Electrical Controls Engineers qualify under the USMCA's Engineer category, which covers roles requiring a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline. Your job duties must involve professional engineering work, such as designing control systems, programming PLCs, or commissioning industrial automation equipment, not general technical support.
How does TN compare to H-1B for this role?
TN is significantly more practical for Electrical Controls Engineers. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and Canadians can receive approval at the port of entry on the same day they apply. H-1B visa requires an employer to enter a random lottery in April, wait months for adjudication, and pay substantially higher filing fees. TN is renewable indefinitely in three-year increments as long as you hold a qualifying job.
Can I switch Electrical Controls Engineer employers on TN status?
You can change employers, but TN status is tied to a specific employer and job offer. Before starting with a new company, your new employer must file a new TN petition or you must obtain a new TN at a port of entry or consulate. Working for a new employer before that approval is in place puts your status at risk.
Where can I find employers who sponsor TN visas for controls engineers?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces employers with recent visa filings and experience sponsoring work visas for engineering roles, so you're not guessing which manufacturers or automation firms are open to visa sponsorship. Focusing your applications on employers experienced with visa sponsorship processes means less time spent educating hiring managers about your work authorization options.
What documents do I need for a TN application as an Electrical Controls Engineer?
You need a signed offer letter specifying your title, role, and degree requirement, your educational credentials such as transcripts and your degree certificate, and a valid Canadian or Mexican passport. Canadian citizens present these directly to CBP at the border. Mexican citizens submit a full packet to a U.S. consulate and attend an interview before receiving their TN visa stamp.
