INTRODUCTION
We'll be upfront, this isn't one of those CAD roles where you'll spend every day creating brand-new products from a blank screen. What it is, however, is an opportunity to become deeply embedded in the engineering process behind some of the most advanced technologies being used in EVs and next-generation electronics.
As a CAD Design Engineer, you will be crucial in supporting and improving the products that are already powering some major electrification programs. Rather than starting from a blank sheet of paper, you'll work closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to optimize existing designs, improve manufacturability, and help bring innovative products to production at scale.
The reality is that great products don't make it to production because of a single brilliant design. They make it because talented engineers continuously improve, refine, and optimize them as requirements evolve. That's where this role comes in.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings for wire harnesses, flexible circuits, and battery interconnect assemblies using established CAD standards and best practices
- Modify and improve existing designs to support manufacturing, quality, and customer requirements
- Collaborate with Design, Process, Manufacturing, and Product Engineering teams to implement engineering changes and manufacturability improvements
- Add manufacturing features and design updates that improve production efficiency and product robustness
- Support the release and revision of engineering components, assemblies, and documentation
- Apply and maintain geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) practices in engineering drawings
- Manage and distribute CAD data to internal stakeholders and cross-functional teams
- Develop CAD best practices, standards, and training materials to support engineering consistency and efficiency
- Contribute design support and technical expertise to future product development initiatives
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, CAD Design, or a related technical field
- 2+ years of CAD design experience, preferably supporting electrical, electromechanical, automotive, or manufacturing-related products
- Experience managing large assemblies and complex 3D CAD models
- Strong problem-solving skills and a desire to continuously learn and improve
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineering and manufacturing teams
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- SolidWorks experience
- Experience supporting manufacturing or production environments
- Startup experience
- Familiarity with wire harnesses, flexible circuits, battery systems, or electromechanical assemblies

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a CAD Engineer
Verify your engineering credential matches the role
TN visa classification requires a degree in engineering, not just a design or drafting certificate. A bachelor's in mechanical or industrial engineering satisfies CBP. A two-year CAD drafting diploma typically does not, even with years of professional experience.
Target manufacturers and AEC firms with visa experience
Aerospace, automotive, and architecture-engineering-construction firms regularly sponsor work visas for engineers. Prioritize employers with recent visa filings, since they're already experienced with the sponsorship process and won't need time to learn the requirements before extending you an offer.
Request a detailed offer letter before your port of entry
CBP officers adjudicate TN applications on the spot for Canadians. Your offer letter must specify your job title as 'engineer,' describe duties requiring engineering knowledge, and confirm full-time or part-time status. Vague letters referencing 'CAD work' or 'drafting' raise classification questions.
Clarify software tool proficiency in your credential documentation
Employers hiring for CAD Engineer roles often ask about SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Revit expertise during the offer stage. Your resume and any credential evaluation should connect your engineering degree to the specific design tools the role requires, strengthening the specialty occupation argument.
Search for TN-sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Finding employers open to TN sponsorship before applying saves weeks of back-and-forth. Migrate Mate filters CAD Engineer roles by TN visa eligibility, so you're applying only to employers already set up to sponsor Canadian and Mexican professionals.
Understand Mexican nationals need consular processing timing
Mexican citizens cannot self-petition at a consulate. Your employer must prepare a support letter before you can apply at a U.S. consulate. Build at least two to four weeks of processing time into your start date negotiation to avoid offer rescissions from timeline mismatches.
CAD Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a CAD Engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, CAD Engineers qualify under the USMCA 'engineer' occupational category, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline. Roles focused primarily on drafting or technician-level work without an engineering degree requirement may not meet CBP's classification standards, so the job description wording matters significantly.
How does TN visa sponsorship for CAD Engineers compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and no multi-month USCIS processing wait. Canadians can receive approval at the border the same day they present their documents. H-1B visa requires a lottery selection, months of USCIS adjudication, and significantly more employer paperwork. For CAD Engineers who qualify, TN is a faster and more predictable path.
Where can I find CAD Engineer jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles with TN visa sponsorship. Rather than filtering through general job boards where sponsorship status is unclear, Migrate Mate surfaces CAD Engineer positions from employers already set up to support TN candidates, reducing time spent on unqualified applications.
Can I switch CAD Engineer employers while on a TN visa?
Yes, but TN status is employer-specific. If you accept a new position, your new employer must prepare a support letter for you, and you'll need to either re-enter at a Canadian port of entry to present it or follow the appropriate process for your situation. You cannot begin working for the new employer until your new TN authorization is in place.
What documents does my employer need to sponsor my TN visa as a CAD Engineer?
Your employer provides a signed offer letter specifying your title as an engineer, your duties, and your compensation structure. They also prepare a support letter documenting your qualifications and role eligibility under the TN category. For Canadian citizens, you present these documents directly at the U.S. border or port of entry, where CBP reviews your degree credentials and supporting materials in real time. Mexican nationals additionally require a consular appointment where you submit the same documentation for visa issuance.
