- Hands-on experience with low voltage DC systems in a solar PV context, including string inverter and central inverter architectures.
- Familiarity with NEC Article 690 (Solar Photovoltaic Systems) and DC system protection requirements.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or AutoCAD Electrical; familiarity with PV layout tools (PVcase, RatedPower, Helioscope, or similar).
- Experience with PV production modeling software (PVsyst, Helioscope, SAM, or equivalent).
- Working knowledge of NEC, IEEE standards, and utility interconnection requirements applicable to distributed generation.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
- NABCEP PV Design Specialist or Installation Professional certification.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Electrical Project Engineer
Align your credentials to Engineer category requirements
TN visa status requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field. A degree in electronics engineering typically qualifies; a general technology diploma usually does not. Confirm your credential maps directly before applying.
Target employers with active project backlogs
Electrical Project Engineers are hired project-by-project in construction, utilities, and industrial sectors. Prioritize employers with multi-year infrastructure or energy contracts, since TN sponsorship requires a specific, non-speculative job offer tied to defined project scope.
Search TN-sponsoring companies through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Electrical Project Engineer roles by employers with documented TN visa hiring history. This cuts the time spent cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with USMCA professional categories.
Request a detailed offer letter covering project scope
CBP officers assess whether your role genuinely fits the Engineer category. Your offer letter should specify the engineering activities involved, not just your job title. Vague descriptions like 'project support' raise scrutiny at the port of entry.
Clarify your PE licensure status with your employer early
Some U.S. employers require a Professional Engineer license for project sign-off authority. A Canadian P.Eng. or Mexican Ing. doesn't automatically transfer. Confirm whether your employer needs licensure before the offer stage to avoid renegotiating later.
Prepare for Canadian border processing with complete documentation
Canadian citizens applying at a U.S. port of entry need the job offer letter, degree credentials, and a TN support letter from their employer. CBP officers decide on the spot, so incomplete packages result in same-day denial with no appeal window.
Electrical Project Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Electrical Project Engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided the role requires and you hold a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field. TN status under the Engineer category covers project management functions that are engineering-driven, such as system design oversight, technical specification development, and construction coordination. Roles that are primarily administrative or procurement-focused may not qualify, even if the job title includes 'engineer.'
How does TN compare to H-1B for Electrical Project Engineer positions?
TN has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and no USCIS petition required for Canadian applicants. H-1B visa requires a lottery selection, a multi-month USCIS filing process, and an October 1 start date. For Electrical Project Engineers with a qualifying degree, TN is faster to obtain and easier to renew, making it the more practical path for most Canadian and Mexican professionals.
Can I switch employers while on TN status as an Electrical Project Engineer?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your current employer and job offer. When you accept a new position, your new employer must support a fresh TN application before you begin work. For Canadians, that means a new port-of-entry application. For Mexicans, it requires a new consular appointment. You cannot start working for the new employer on your existing TN.
Where can I find Electrical Project Engineer jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking TN-eligible roles in the U.S. You can filter by job title and visa type to surface employers with recent visa filings—a strong indicator they're experienced with work visa sponsorship. This is far more efficient than sorting through general job boards where sponsorship willingness is rarely disclosed upfront.
Does my project engineering work experience substitute for a degree on a TN application?
Not directly. The TN Engineer category requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in engineering. Work experience alone does not satisfy this requirement under USMCA, unlike some other visa categories where experience can substitute for education. If your degree is in a related science or technology field rather than engineering specifically, you may need to document how the coursework aligns with electrical engineering practice.
