Verify your degree meets TN standards
TN visa classification requires a degree in civil engineering specifically, not a related field like construction management. If your transcript uses a different title, get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before applying.
Target firms with active infrastructure contracts
Engineering firms holding federal or state infrastructure contracts routinely sponsor TN workers because project timelines demand it. Filter job postings by contract vehicles like IDIQ or design-build to find employers already structured for international hires.
Request a detailed offer letter covering all TN fields
CBP officers review your offer letter at the port of entry. It must specify your job title as Civil Engineer, your proffered duties, the project or engagement scope, and your employment period. Vague letters are a common cause of TN denial.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers fast
Searching for civil engineering roles that explicitly support TN sponsorship takes time. Migrate Mate surfaces employers already open to TN workers, so you can focus your applications on firms prepared to move through the process.
Clarify your PE licensure status before the interview
Many civil project engineer roles in the U.S. require a Professional Engineer license for signing off on construction documents. Determine whether your role requires PE stamp authority early, since Canadian provincial licenses need state-level conversion.
Confirm your admission period matches your project timeline
CBP grants TN status in up to three-year increments. If your project runs longer, your employer needs to file for an extension before your I-94 expires. Align your employment contract term with the TN period requested at entry.
Civil Project Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Civil Project Engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Civil engineers are explicitly listed in the USMCA TN occupational categories. Your job duties must align with civil engineering work, such as design, analysis, or project management of infrastructure systems. A degree in civil engineering from an accredited institution is required, and the offer letter must reflect qualifying duties.
How does TN compare to H-1B for civil engineering jobs?
TN has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and can be processed at a port of entry in a single day. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship months in advance, a lottery selection, and USCIS petition processing. For civil engineers who qualify under USMCA, TN is faster and more predictable than the H-1B visa route.
Where can I find Civil Project Engineer jobs that support TN sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking roles with TN visa sponsorship. Rather than filtering through generic job boards that rarely flag immigration support, Migrate Mate focuses on employers already structured to hire TN workers in professional engineering roles.
Can a Mexican citizen get TN status as a Civil Project Engineer?
Yes, but Mexican citizens cannot apply at a port of entry. You must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate in Mexico and receive stamp approval before entering the U.S. to work. The USMCA occupational requirements are identical, but the application process and timeline differ from the Canadian land-border process.
What happens if my civil engineering project ends before my TN status expires?
You can change employers on TN status, but the new employer must be prepared to sponsor you under a new TN filing. Canadians can do this at a port of entry with a new offer letter. Mexican citizens need to return to a consulate. Your status is tied to the specific employer and role listed on your I-94.
