Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Commissioning Engineer
Align your credentials to TN engineering criteria
TN status requires a qualifying engineering degree or provincial/state license. Gather your transcripts, degree equivalency documentation, and any professional engineering designations before outreach. Consular officers assess these documents directly, so gaps cost you the stamp.
Target employers with active commissioning project pipelines
Focus on industrial construction firms, utilities, and EPC contractors running capital projects. Companies mid-build on plants or substations need commissioning engineers now and understand TN timelines better than general engineering employers recruiting for staff roles.
Search TN-sponsored commissioning roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters engineering jobs by TN visa sponsorship, so you see employers already set up to hire Canadian and Mexican professionals. Run searches by project type or industry sector to find active commissioning openings that fit your discipline.
Negotiate the offer letter before crossing the border
Your TN offer letter must specify your job title as an engineer, your duties, and your employment period. Vague descriptions of commissioning scope have caused Canadian applicants to be turned back at the port of entry. Get the letter right before you travel.
Clarify contractor versus direct-hire status with your employer
TN commissioning roles are often project-based or staffed through contractors. USCIS and CBP scrutinize contractor arrangements for evidence of true employer-employee relationships. Confirm your offer is from the entity sponsoring your TN, not a downstream client.
Prepare for discipline-specific questions from CBP officers
CBP officers at the port of entry may ask how your engineering background applies to commissioning work. Bring project summaries or a role description that maps your discipline, whether electrical, mechanical, or controls, to the specific systems you'll commission.

Find Commissioning Engineer JobsCommissioning Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Commissioning Engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided your offer letter titles you as an engineer and your duties align with engineering professional work. Commissioning engineers who test, validate, and start up industrial systems fit within the TN engineering category. The role must require and you must hold a qualifying engineering degree or a provincial or state professional license recognized under USMCA.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Commissioning Engineer positions?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, which means you can start work as soon as your application is approved, often the same day at a port of entry. H-1B requires an April lottery with results months later and employer petition fees. For project-based commissioning work with defined timelines, TN is faster and more predictable than H-1B for qualifying nationals.
Where can I find Commissioning Engineer jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles with TN sponsorship. You can filter by job title, industry, and visa type to surface commissioning openings at employers who already understand TN requirements. This avoids spending time on applications at companies unfamiliar with the USMCA professional categories.
Can I switch from one commissioning employer to another while on TN status?
Yes, but TN status is employer-specific. When you change employers, you need a new TN authorization tied to the new company's offer letter. Canadians can obtain this at a port of entry or through a USCIS change-of-status filing. Your previous TN does not transfer, and you should not begin work with the new employer until the new authorization is in place.
Do project-based or contract Commissioning Engineer roles create TN complications?
They can. CBP officers look for a clear employer-employee relationship, and staffing arrangements where a contractor places you at a client site raise scrutiny. Your TN offer letter must come from your direct employer of record, and your duties at any client site must match what the letter describes. Document the structure clearly before your port-of-entry or consular appointment.
