Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Mechanical Engineer
Confirm your degree aligns with the role
TN visa eligibility for Mechanical Engineers requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in mechanical engineering or a directly related field. A degree in industrial or aerospace engineering may qualify, but a general science degree typically won't support the petition without documentation showing direct relevance.
Get your credentials evaluated before applying
Mexican professionals with a licenciatura degree should obtain a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before interviewing. U.S. hiring managers and immigration contacts at employers unfamiliar with Mexican academic systems may require this to confirm equivalency upfront.
Target employers with existing cross-border operations
Manufacturing companies, automotive suppliers, and aerospace contractors with facilities in Canada or Mexico are accustomed to TN filings and process them faster. Prioritize roles at companies with engineering operations on both sides of the border, where HR teams already understand USMCA documentation.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready engineering roles
Search Migrate Mate to identify Mechanical Engineer positions at employers with recent visa filing history. Filter by role and location to focus your applications on companies already experienced with work visa sponsorship, making it far easier to have a productive conversation about TN status than with employers who have never navigated the process before.
Negotiate who prepares the support letter
The TN support letter must describe your specific duties, the professional capacity of the role, and your qualifications. Ask your prospective employer who drafts it. If their HR team lacks TN experience, you can propose language referencing your engineering degree and how the role aligns with the USMCA's Mechanical Engineer category to help them draft an approvable letter.
Understand how port-of-entry processing affects your start date
Canadian engineers can activate TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry without a visa stamp, often the same day. Mexican nationals must obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate first. Build your start date negotiation around whichever process applies to your citizenship.
Mechanical Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Mechanical Engineer qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Mechanical Engineer is explicitly listed as a qualifying TN occupation under USMCA Appendix 2 of Annex 16-A. You need a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline. The role your employer offers must align with that field, not just carry the job title.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Mechanical Engineers?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and can be approved at the border or a consulate without USCIS petition processing for Canadians. H-1B requires a lottery selection before you can even file. TN is typically faster and less expensive to obtain, though it does not confer dual intent, which affects long-term green card planning.
Where can I find Mechanical Engineer jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job searches and lets you filter Mechanical Engineer roles by employers who sponsor TN status. That focus saves you from cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with USMCA classifications, which is one of the most common sources of delay in the TN job search process.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for my TN petition?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead that describes your job title, your specific engineering duties, the professional capacity of the position, your qualifications, your intended length of stay, and your compensation arrangement. Without a detailed, accurate support letter, CBP officers or consular officials can deny the petition regardless of your credentials.
Can Mexican Mechanical Engineers face delays that Canadians don't?
Yes. Mexican nationals must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate and obtain a visa stamp before entering the U.S. in TN status. Canadians can present their documentation directly at a port of entry. Consulate appointment availability varies by location, so Mexican engineers should factor consular processing time into their offer acceptance and start date negotiation.
