Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Head Of Technology
Align your title to TN categories
TN approval hinges on whether your job title maps to a recognized USMCA occupation. Head of Technology roles often qualify under Computer Systems Analyst or Engineer, but your offer letter must reflect that framing explicitly, not just seniority.
Document cross-functional technical authority
CBP officers assess whether your role is genuinely specialized. Gather evidence showing you direct technical architecture decisions, not just manage teams. Project briefs, system design sign-offs, and technology roadmaps all strengthen your case at the border or consulate.
Target employers experienced with visa sponsorship
Companies experienced with visa sponsorship understand the employer letter requirements and won't stall your start date. Use Migrate Mate to filter Head of Technology roles by employers with recent visa filings before applying, so you're not educating a first-time sponsor mid-offer.
Secure a detailed employer support letter early
Your employer's support letter must specify your duties, your qualifying degree, your Canadian or Mexican citizenship, and the USMCA category. Request a draft before your interview stage so you can flag gaps in technical specificity before CBP or a consular officer reviews it.
Prepare for consular processing if you hold Mexican citizenship
Mexican nationals cannot self-file at the border and must apply at a U.S. consulate. Schedule your DS-160 and consular appointment as soon as you have a signed offer. Appointment availability varies significantly by location and season, so delays affect your start date directly.
Clarify scope before accepting a hybrid leadership role
Roles that blend technology leadership with broad business strategy, such as combined CTO and COO functions, can complicate TN eligibility. Confirm with your employer that your primary duties are technical before signing, since a predominantly managerial role may not satisfy USCIS specialty occupation standards.

Find Head Of Technology JobsHead Of Technology TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Head of Technology role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes, if your duties center on technical systems design, infrastructure oversight, or software development strategy. CBP typically classifies these roles under the Computer Systems Analyst or Engineer category within the USMCA schedule. Roles where business management dominates over technical work are harder to qualify, so your offer letter's duty description is the deciding document.
How does the TN visa compare to the H-1B for Head of Technology positions?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and can be approved the same day at the border for Canadian citizens. H-1B requires employer sponsorship through a random lottery with results typically in April for an October start. For a Head of Technology role with a confirmed offer, the TN is faster and more predictable, provided your duties map cleanly to a USMCA category.
Where can I find Head of Technology jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles with TN sponsorship. You can search Head of Technology listings filtered by TN eligibility, which means you're applying to employers who already understand the filing process rather than companies encountering TN sponsorship for the first time.
Can a Canadian Head of Technology candidate file for TN status at the border without a lawyer?
Canadian citizens can present their TN application directly to CBP at a land border or preclearance airport. You'll need your offer letter, degree credentials, and proof of Canadian citizenship. CBP adjudicates on the spot. Many applicants file without legal representation, though complex duty descriptions or hybrid executive titles benefit from a reviewed employer letter before you travel.
What happens to my TN status if I change employers or get promoted to a broader executive role?
Changing employers requires a new TN petition since your approval is tied to a specific employer and role. A promotion that significantly shifts your duties, for example from technical director to a company-wide executive role, may require you to reassess whether the new position still maps to a qualifying USMCA category. File a new petition before your duties formally change.
