Job Description
About the role: We are seeking an innovative and detail-oriented AI Prompt Engineer / Legal Content Developer to help design, build, and optimize AI-driven tools that support complex legal writing workflows. This role goes beyond traditional legal writing, focusing on developing, refining, and scaling prompt frameworks and AI-assisted solutions that enhance the quality, consistency, and efficiency of legal content creation.
As part of a forward-thinking team, you will collaborate closely with attorneys, technologists, and operations stakeholders to shape how AI is leveraged across immigration casework. This is an opportunity to play a key role in transforming legal service delivery through intelligent tool development and prompt engineering.
How will you make a difference as an AI Prompt Engineer / Legal Writer at Fragomen?
- Design, test, and iterate on AI prompts to support the drafting of complex business immigration case materials (e.g., O-1, EB-1, NIW petitions).
- Partner with legal teams to translate nuanced legal strategies into structured, repeatable prompt frameworks.
- Develop and optimize AI-assisted workflows that improve drafting efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
- Evaluate AI-generated outputs, refining prompts to ensure high-quality, compliant, and persuasive legal content.
- Collaborate with internal technology teams to enhance and expand AI-enabled tools and platforms.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on prompt engineering best practices and AI-assisted legal writing.
- Identify opportunities to automate or streamline manual drafting and research processes.
- Ensure all AI-assisted outputs align with legal standards, firm policies, and client expectations.
- Continuously monitor and improve prompt performance based on feedback, outcomes, and evolving AI capabilities.
- Contribute to internal knowledge sharing and the development of prompt libraries and documentation.
Leverage your valuable skills and experience to make an impact at Fragomen:
- Bachelors degree in Creative Writing, English, Journalism, or writing related field.
- 2–5 years of experience in legal writing, technical writing, AI prompt engineering, or a related field.
- Strong interest in developing tools and systems, not just using them.
- Experience working with generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, or similar platforms).
- Exceptional writing, editing, and analytical skills with the ability to break down complex information into structured inputs.
- Ability to think systematically about language, logic, and workflows.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, evolving environment with emerging technologies.
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to work cross-functionally with legal and technical teams.
- Business immigration experience is a plus but not required.
All offers and/or employment contracts are contingent upon the successful completion of the Firm’s pre-employment screening process. This process may include verifying the candidate’s identity, confirming legal authorization to work in the offered position’s location, and conducting a comprehensive background check, where permitted by local regulations. We use limited AI-assisted tools for administrative screening purposes only - never for decision-making. All hiring decisions are made by people. Applicants may have rights to information and explanations regarding the use of such tools, or request human review, as required by applicable regional laws.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Prompt Engineer
Align your credentials to Computer Systems Analyst
TN classification for Prompt Engineers typically files under Computer Systems Analyst. Your degree transcript and job offer letter both need to reflect that framing explicitly. A mismatch between your stated role and this USCIS-recognized category is the most common documentation stumbling block.
Target employers with active AI infrastructure
Focus on companies building production LLM pipelines, not those experimenting with AI as a side project. Teams with dedicated ML engineering functions are far more likely to understand TN sponsorship requirements and move quickly through the offer process.
Request a support letter before your border crossing
Canadians don't need a visa, but CBP officers at the port of entry will review your employer's support letter on the spot. Get it on company letterhead, signed, and specific about your systems analysis duties, not just your job title.
Clarify your role scope during offer negotiation
Prompt Engineering duties overlap with software development and data science. Negotiate your offer letter language so it emphasizes requirements analysis, system design, and model evaluation rather than pure coding, which strengthens the Computer Systems Analyst classification for TN purposes.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for TN-sponsoring employers
Searching broadly wastes time on employers unfamiliar with visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces Prompt Engineer openings at companies with recent visa filings, so you're applying where the hiring infrastructure already exists to support work visa candidates.
Prepare for Mexican consular processing timelines
Mexican nationals apply for TN status at a U.S. consulate, which adds scheduling lead time that Canadians skip. Build at least three to four weeks into your start date negotiation so your employer isn't pressured and your consular appointment isn't rushed.

Find Prompt Engineer JobsPrompt Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Prompt Engineer qualify as a TN visa occupation?
Prompt Engineer is not a listed TN category by that exact title, but most roles qualify under Computer Systems Analyst, which is explicitly covered under USMCA. Your job duties must center on analyzing, designing, and evaluating AI or language model systems. The offer letter language and your degree field both need to support that classification clearly for CBP or consular review.
How does TN visa sponsorship for Prompt Engineers compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadians, so you're not waiting on a random selection to work. H-1B requires your employer to file a petition months in advance and pay substantial government fees. TN approval for Canadians can happen the same day at a port of entry. The tradeoff is that TN status requires continuous employer sponsorship and doesn't lead directly to permanent residence.
What degree do I need to qualify as a Prompt Engineer under TN?
A bachelor's degree in computer science, computational linguistics, information systems, mathematics, or a closely related field is the standard credential. Some officers also accept degrees in cognitive science or engineering with relevant coursework. What matters is that the degree field plausibly connects to the systems analysis duties in your job description. A degree in an unrelated field makes the classification harder to defend.
How do I find Prompt Engineer jobs where employers already understand TN sponsorship?
Many employers are unfamiliar with TN mechanics and confuse it with H-1B, which slows or kills offers. Migrate Mate filters Prompt Engineer listings by companies with recent visa filings, which means you're targeting hiring teams experienced with work visa sponsorship and won't back out over procedural concerns.
Can I switch Prompt Engineer employers on a TN visa?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your current employer. You need a new TN approval before starting with a new company. Canadians can get this processed at a port of entry with the new employer's support letter. Mexicans need a new consular appointment. There is no grace period that allows you to start working for the new employer before your new TN is approved.
