About The Team
AI Research Lab is one of DoorDash’s frontier innovation hubs, focused on building the foundation for an AI-native future across our three core audiences: consumers, merchants, and dashers. As AI capabilities accelerate, the AI Research Lab operates at the center of technical exploration and real-world execution — connecting frontier model research, internal platform investments, operator teams, and strategic external partners. Our mission is to translate cutting-edge AI research into scalable, production-ready systems that drive measurable business impact. We combine deep technical rigor with strong operational execution to ensure that breakthrough capabilities become durable competitive advantages for DoorDash.
About The Role
As an Associate Manager, Strategy & Operations on our AI Research Lab, you will play a central role in converting frontier AI advancements into shipped products and scalable infrastructure. You will operate across research, product, and operations to move from early discovery and experimentation to deployment and impact. This role sits at the intersection of customer insight, technical innovation, and business execution. You will help define and scale the Lab’s most important bets while building the foundations that enable AI applications to compound over time.
You’re Excited About This Opportunity Because You Will …
- Reimagining core experiences through AI, such as the merchant journey, by partnering directly with in-field merchants, sales, support, product, and engineering teams. You will help unify major initiatives (e.g., AMPED, VAM, NBA, and other Mx-first efforts) into a coherent, AI-native interaction model.
- Own revenue-driving AI initiatives, operating as the accountable business owner for high-priority AI bets and ensuring clear linkage between technical progress and financial outcomes.
- Lead business planning cycles, developing go-to-market strategies for AI-powered products and capabilities, overseeing execution through structured project plans, resource allocation, and KPI tracking.
- Develop new business metrics and measurement frameworks, including:
- Defining what should be measured and why
- Establishing performance thresholds using data-driven benchmarking
- Localizing metrics across geographies and market types
- Driving AI adoption across DoorDash by enabling non-technical teams with enterprise tools, workflows, and experimentation sandboxes that integrate AI into daily operations.
- Building scalable AI foundations, including evaluation datasets, guardrails, monitoring systems, and strategies for custom foundation models that ensure safety, reliability, and long-term leverage.
- Operationalizing frontier technologies from external partners (e.g. OpenAI, Anthropic, and emerging startups), translating research breakthroughs into revenue-generating product capabilities and production systems.
- Supporting the development of a DoorDash data collection marketplace, strengthening proprietary data advantages and long-term model performance.
- Leading rapid experimentation cycles, validating product-market fit, measuring business impact, and ensuring AI initiatives translate into tangible outcomes.
This role requires an entrepreneurial leader who thrives in ambiguity and can bridge technical depth with structured execution. You should be comfortable engaging directly with merchants, collaborating with engineers on model evaluation strategies, structuring strategic AI partnerships, and diving into metrics to diagnose performance.
We’re excited about you because…
- You have a Bachelor’s degree or higher
- You have 3+ years of experience in consulting, strategy, or operations; high-growth/early-stage startup or entrepreneurial experience is a big plus
- Your expert communication and interpersonal skills set you apart
- You are a strong analytical thinker who can provide applicable recommendations out of a complex, sometimes murky, dataset
- You have a bias towards action and are able to thrive in a fast-paced, constantly changing work environment
- Your charisma allows you to excel at connecting with Merchants and internal teams to promote products and drive adoption
- You crave responsibility and want to shape the vision and direction of the company
- You’re willing to get your hands dirty and you’re open to feedback.
- You’re excellent at motivating potential partners to see the benefits DoorDash Commerce Platform will bring to their business
- Must be comfortable regularly exercising discretion and independent judgment in performing job duties, including evaluating options, making informed decisions, and determining appropriate courses of action within the scope of assigned responsibilities.

Which companies sponsor visas for strategy operations managers in California?
Large technology and enterprise companies have the most consistent track record of H-1B sponsorship for strategy operations roles in California. Google, Meta, Apple, Salesforce, and Netflix in the Bay Area, along with healthcare systems like Kaiser Permanente and biotechnology firms in San Diego and South San Francisco, regularly file H-1B petitions for strategy and operations management positions. Consulting firms with California offices, including McKinsey and Accenture, also sponsor these roles.
Which visa types are most common for strategy operations manager roles in California?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for strategy operations managers in California, as the role typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in business, management, economics, or a related field, satisfying the specialty occupation standard. Candidates with exceptional track records may qualify for an O-1A. Australians holding an E-3 visa can also fill these roles, and some Canadian and Mexican nationals enter on TN visas under the management consultant or economist categories.
Which cities in California have the most strategy operations manager sponsorship jobs?
San Francisco and the broader Bay Area account for the largest share of strategy operations manager sponsorship jobs in California, driven by the concentration of technology companies, venture-backed startups, and global enterprise headquarters. Los Angeles follows, particularly in media, entertainment, and tech-adjacent industries. San Diego has a growing presence tied to biotechnology and defense, while Sacramento hosts roles within state government contractors and healthcare organizations.
How to find strategy operations manager visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search strategy operations manager roles in California without sorting through companies that don't sponsor. The platform surfaces openings at technology, healthcare, and enterprise companies across the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and San Diego that have active H-1B or other sponsorship programs. Filtering by California and this role category on Migrate Mate reduces the time spent identifying which employers are actually open to sponsoring international candidates.
Are there any California-specific considerations for strategy operations managers seeking visa sponsorship?
California's prevailing wage requirements for H-1B positions are among the highest in the country, reflecting the state's elevated cost of living, particularly in the Bay Area and Los Angeles. Employers must certify on the Labor Condition Application that the offered wage meets or exceeds the applicable prevailing wage for the job location. Strategy operations managers at California-based companies also benefit from the state's concentration of cap-exempt research institutions, which are not subject to the annual H-1B lottery.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored strategy operations manager jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
