How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Business Development
Target strategic partnerships and corporate development roles
Pure sales or BD roles can face H-1B specialty occupation challenges because USCIS may question whether the position requires a specific degree. Corporate development, strategic partnerships, and market expansion roles at tech companies have stronger analytical components that support the visa case.
Consider sales engineering as a technical BD path
Sales engineering roles combine technical expertise with business development and have much stronger H-1B specialty occupation arguments. If you have a technical degree, this hybrid path can be one of the most sponsorship-friendly ways into BD.
Use an MBA as a bridge to tech BD roles
MBA programs with strong tech recruiting pipelines regularly place international graduates into BD and strategy roles at companies like Google, Amazon, and Salesforce. These companies have established H-1B processes for MBA hires in strategic functions.
Emphasize analytical and strategic skills over sales metrics
When positioning yourself for sponsorship, lead with market analysis, competitive intelligence, and strategic planning skills rather than quota attainment. USCIS evaluates whether the role requires specialized knowledge - analytical framing makes a stronger case.
Focus on industries where domain expertise matters
BD roles in fintech, healthtech, and enterprise SaaS often require specialized industry knowledge that strengthens the specialty occupation argument. If you bring domain expertise from your home country's market, that's a differentiator employers value.
Explore TN visa status if you're Canadian or Mexican
Canadian and Mexican nationals can use TN visa status for management consulting or related business roles, which may cover certain BD positions. TN visas don't require a lottery and can be renewed indefinitely, offering a more predictable path than H-1B.

Does international experience give business development candidates a sponsorship advantage?
International experience can strengthen a visa petition when the employer demonstrates that your cross-border expertise, language skills, or knowledge of foreign regulatory environments is directly relevant to the company's growth strategy. A BD professional who understands European data privacy regulations, Asian market entry dynamics, or Latin American distribution networks brings specialized knowledge that is difficult to find domestically. This makes the employer's case for sponsorship more compelling to USCIS.
Are business development roles easier to sponsor than pure sales roles?
Generally yes. Business development roles involve strategic activities like partnership structuring, market analysis, and long-term revenue planning that more clearly require degree-level expertise. Pure sales roles focused on quota attainment and direct selling face more H-1B scrutiny since USCIS may question whether a specific degree is required. BD roles that involve market research, competitive analysis, deal modeling, or international expansion strategy present a stronger specialty occupation case.
Which industries sponsor business development professionals most often?
Technology companies expanding into new markets, pharmaceutical firms building distribution partnerships, and financial services companies developing strategic alliances are among the most active sponsors. SaaS companies with enterprise sales motions that require complex deal structuring also sponsor BD professionals regularly. International expansion roles at any company with global ambitions are particularly strong opportunities because the employer can directly tie the role to the candidate's cross-border expertise.
Can the L-1A visa work for senior business development leaders?
Yes. The L-1A visa is designed for intracompany transfers of managers and executives, and senior BD leaders who oversee teams and drive strategic partnerships at multinational companies can qualify. You must have worked for the same employer for at least one continuous year in the past three years in a managerial or executive capacity. This pathway bypasses the H-1B lottery and is well-suited for VP-level BD professionals moving to a company's U.S. operations.
What degree fields best support a business development visa petition?
Degrees in business administration, economics, international relations, or marketing are the most commonly accepted fields for BD role petitions. The employer should specify no more than two or three closely related degree fields to avoid weakening the specialty occupation argument. If the BD role has a strong technical component, such as selling enterprise software or managing technical partnerships, a degree in computer science or engineering paired with business experience can produce an even stronger petition.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Business Development jobs?
When a U.S. employer sponsors a foreign worker for a work visa, they are legally required to pay at least the "prevailing wage", the average wage paid to workers in the same occupation, in the same geographic area, with similar experience. This is set by the Department of Labor to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at below-market rates. The prevailing wage varies significantly by role, location, and experience level. For example, a business development in California will have a different prevailing wage than the same role in a smaller state. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search Page.
