Electrical & Computing Engineering

The Office of Research and Innovation (OR&I) and Information Technology Services (ITS) at Georgia Southern University, in partnership with the AI: Automation and Humanistic Application ICUE, invite applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow - AI Research Collaborator. This position supports interdisciplinary research at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), high-performance computing (HPC), and applied scholarship.

Reporting to the Provost Fellow for the ICUE and collaborating with the Associate Vice President for Research (AVPR), Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Research IT, and faculty across the university, the Fellow will help researchers, particularly those in non-computational fields, integrate AI/ML methods into competitive grant proposals and active research projects.
The Fellow will maintain an active affiliation with the ICUE and contribute to interdisciplinary AI research, faculty engagement, proposal development, and strategic initiatives. Through these efforts, the position will foster collaboration, increase effective use of shared computing resources, and strengthen Georgia Southern University's capacity to secure external funding for "AI + X" research across disciplines.

• Work closely with the AI ICUE Provost Fellow and faculty across campus as an AI research collaborator, translating discipline-specific research questions and hypotheses into scientifically appropriate, computationally feasible AI/ML approaches
• Participate in faculty onboarding, consultation, documentation, and training activities that help research teams become productive users of HPC and GPU resources
• Assist faculty in identifying and pursuing external computational resources and allocation opportunities, including the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR), as appropriate
• Maintain an active scholarly presence in the broader AI/ML community through independent, collaborative, or methodological research
• Support faculty in preparing research data for computational analysis, including data organization, preprocessing, documentation, provenance, and reproducibility practices
• Contribute as a co-author to interdisciplinary peer-reviewed manuscripts, with primary responsibility, as appropriate, for computational, algorithmic, and data-methodology sections
• Contribute technical expertise to interdisciplinary project teams and, when appropriate and permitted by sponsor and institutional requirements, participate as key personnel or in another suitable proposal role
• Partner with faculty and the Office of Research Administration to support federal grant proposals targeting the NSF, NIH, DOW, DOE, USDA, and other grant agencies
• Lead the drafting of technically rigorous Data Management and Sharing (DMS) plans and Facilities, Equipment, and Other Resources (FEOR) sections, ensuring alignment with agency-specific mandates
• Help position Georgia Southern to compete for large-scale "AI + X" funding opportunities by developing AI research workflows that are rigorous, reproducible, secure, compliant, and suitable for federal proposal review and funded research
• Work closely with the CTO and Research IT teams to expand effective utilization of Georgia Southern's Talon HPC cluster, with particular emphasis on GPU-accelerated AI/ML workloads
• Design and optimize workflows for shared HPC environments, including job scheduling, resource allocation, data movement, storage, and scalable GPU-enabled computation

Educational Requirements

• Ph.D. earned within the last five (5) years in Computer Science, Data Science, Computational Engineering, Bioinformatics, Computational Social Science, or another highly quantitative field with substantial emphasis on machine learning, deep learning, or computational research

Required Experience

• Demonstrated experience building, training, fine-tuning, and evaluating machine-learning or deep-learning models using established frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or comparable tools
• Demonstrated hands-on experience with GPU-accelerated computing and high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, including executing computationally intensive AI/ML workloads in shared computing environments
• Strong record of scientific productivity as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, conference proceedings, or comparable scholarly outputs

Preferred Experience

• Experience contributing to competitive federal grant proposals or externally funded research projects
• Familiarity with containerized and reproducible research environments, such as Docker and Apptainer/Singularity, as well as version-control and research-software best practices
• Knowledge of responsible AI practices, AI ethics, data governance, privacy, security, reproducibility, and algorithmic-bias assessment or mitigation
