AI Researcher Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a ai researcher in New Jersey?
AI researchers in New Jersey are not required to hold a state-issued license or registration, so the path runs through education and demonstrated research ability. Most positions require at least a master's degree, and roles at major pharmaceutical and defense employers in Princeton and Newark commonly prefer a PhD. Building a portfolio through graduate research, open-source contributions, or published papers is the most direct way to qualify for competitive New Jersey openings.
How much do AI researchers make in New Jersey?
AI researchers in New Jersey earn a median of about $140,840 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $85,780 for the lowest 10% to over $209,850 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire ai researchers in New Jersey?
Employers hiring ai researchers in New Jersey right now include Versant, Merck, and Innodata, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New Jersey's concentration of pharmaceutical headquarters, financial services firms, and defense contractors along the I-95 corridor means the hiring base is unusually broad for a single state.
Which New Jersey cities have the most ai researcher jobs?
Englewood Cliffs, Rahway, and Hoboken have the most ai researcher openings in New Jersey. Princeton draws heavily from its university research ecosystem and pharmaceutical giants clustered nearby, Newark and Jersey City benefit from proximity to New York City financial and tech firms that maintain New Jersey offices, and the Edison and Parsippany corridors attract defense and enterprise technology employers with large research divisions.
Are there remote ai researcher jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 75% of ai researcher openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves computation, modeling, and writing rather than on-site lab presence. The roles most often listed as fully remote are those focused on NLP, ML engineering, and data-centric research rather than roles that require access to proprietary lab infrastructure.
How can I get hired as a ai researcher in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a research internship or rotational associate program, which pharmaceutical employers like Johnson and Johnson and financial firms headquartered in the Newark and Jersey City corridor regularly offer to recent graduates. Adjacent roles such as data analyst, ML engineer, or research engineer are common stepping stones because they share the core technical skills. A strong thesis project, a published preprint, or a reproducible open-source experiment often matters more to New Jersey hiring teams than years of industry experience.
Where can I find and apply to ai researcher jobs in New Jersey?
You can find and apply to ai researcher jobs in New Jersey on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and target location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
