Back End Developer Jobs in Missouri: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a back end developer in Missouri?
Back end development in Missouri requires no state-issued license or registration, so the path runs through education and demonstrated technical skill. Most Missouri employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering, though strong candidates from accredited coding bootcamps are competitive too. Building a portfolio of deployed projects, contributing to open source work, and earning cloud certifications from AWS or Microsoft are the credentials that move applications forward with Missouri hiring teams.
How much do back end developers make in Missouri?
Back end developers in Missouri earn a median of about $126,120 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,570 for the lowest 10% to over $169,340 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire back end developers in Missouri?
Employers hiring back end developers in Missouri right now include Esri, Optomi, and CVS Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Missouri's concentration of financial services, healthcare IT, and insurance firms means back end roles here often involve high-compliance environments and large-scale data systems.
Which Missouri cities have the most back end developer jobs?
St Louis, St. Louis, and Florissant have the most back end developer openings in Missouri. Kansas City leads because of its dense cluster of fintech, insurance, and healthcare IT employers, while St. Louis draws volume from enterprise software firms, defense contractors, and major financial institutions like Edward Jones, and Columbia contributes openings tied to university technology departments and regional insurance carriers.
Are there remote back end developer jobs in Missouri?
Yes, and more than most fields. Back end development is well suited to remote work because the role centers on code, APIs, and cloud infrastructure rather than physical presence. About 50% of back end developer openings tied to Missouri are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how broadly Missouri employers have adopted distributed engineering teams. Roles involving cloud services, microservices architecture, and API development tend to be the most consistently offered as fully remote.
How can I get hired as a back end developer in Missouri with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is an associate or junior developer role at a mid-size Missouri employer, where smaller teams give early-career engineers broader exposure faster. Companies like Cerner and large Kansas City fintech firms run structured new-grad programs and internship-to-hire pipelines worth targeting directly. Moving laterally from a QA engineer, data analyst, or IT support role is another common path into back end work at Missouri employers. A portfolio of deployed personal or open source projects, paired with a cloud certification, gives candidates without professional experience a concrete edge in screening.
