4. Information security analyst

How the OPT to H-1B transition works
The H-1B visa is employer-sponsored and cap-subject, so the move starts with an employer willing to file. They register you in the H-1B visa lottery in early March, and if you are selected, file the petition for an October 1 start. Since February 2026, selection is weighted by wage level, so higher-paid roles have better odds.
If your OPT runs out before October, the cap-gap extension keeps you working. A timely, cap-subject change-of-status petition extends your F-1 status and OPT authorization to your H-1B start date or April 1, whichever comes first, and keeps you exempt from the $100,000 fee added in September 2025, which applies only to petitions processed abroad.
What changed for OPT students in 2026
A DHS final rule published on July 17, 2026 ends the long-standing duration-of-status framework for F-1 students.
Starting September 15, 2026, you will be admitted for a fixed period tied to your program, and staying for OPT or STEM OPT will mean closer attention to your I-94 dates.
Two protections that matter for the H-1B move are preserved: the cap-gap extension is unchanged, and the 180-day automatic extension for a timely STEM OPT filing stays in place.
One thing tightened. After OPT ends, the grace period to leave, change status, or move to a new program is now 30 days rather than 60.

When is the H-1B lottery?
Employers register candidates in early March, and selections are usually announced by late March for an October 1 start. If you are on OPT, your employer has to register you during that window, so confirm they plan to before the season opens.
How many times can I enter the H-1B lottery on OPT?
It depends on your field. Non-STEM graduates get one year of OPT and one shot at the lottery. STEM graduates get the 24-month extension, which means up to three years of OPT and three lottery attempts, a large advantage.
