Civil Project Engineer Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a civil project engineer job in Chicago?
Focus your search on Chicago's municipal agencies, large transportation contractors, and engineering consultancies tied to the city's ongoing infrastructure programs, including transit expansion, road reconstruction, and water system upgrades. The Loop and Near North Side concentrate most office-based engineering roles. Candidates who can show direct experience with IDOT or CDOT project delivery, local utility coordination, or Chicago-specific permitting processes stand out significantly in this market.
Which companies hire civil project engineers in Chicago?
Companies currently hiring civil project engineers in Chicago include EXP, Benesch, and F.H. Paschen, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Chicago's hiring pool is particularly broad, drawing from large multidisciplinary engineering firms, regional transportation contractors, and city and county agencies managing long-term capital improvement programs.
Are there remote civil project engineer jobs in Chicago?
Yes, but only selectively. Civil project engineering is largely site-dependent work, so fully remote roles are uncommon. About 33% of civil project engineer openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, typically covering roles focused on design, scheduling, cost estimation, or project controls rather than field oversight.
How can I get a civil project engineer job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is targeting staff engineer or project engineer assistant roles at mid-size consultancies and regional contractors working on city infrastructure contracts. Chicago's active pipeline of water main, transit, and roadway projects creates consistent demand for entry-level support. Internship experience with CDOT, IDOT, or the Chicago Transit Authority carries strong weight locally, as does familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D and IDOT design standards.
Which industries hire the most civil project engineers in Chicago?
Most civil project engineer openings in Chicago sit in Consulting & Professional Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Chicago's scale as a regional transportation and infrastructure hub, combined with ongoing municipal capital investment, keeps these sectors consistently active for engineering talent.
