JOB SUMMARY
The Respiratory Care Clinical Quality Educator has the overall responsibility for the educational development and growth of the Respiratory Care Department and all patient populations served by the department. The Clinical Quality Educator is responsible for developing and implementing clinical education programs focused on three key performance areas: clinical competencies, new hire orientation, and associated quality improvements. The Clinical Quality Educator will coordinate and personally provide education to new and current staff as well as students to enhance the optimum skill mix and performance of the department. The Clinical Quality Educator will maintain and or learn new skills by working approximately 15% of total hours in clinical practice. JOB DESCRIPTION
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform and demonstrate clinical competence in all acute patient care areas; work clinical shifts up to 50% of total hours and more frequently when education obligations are fulfilled.
- Coordinate and provide orientation to new graduates and caregivers; cross-train current caregivers to specialty areas; and educate other disciplines upon request.
- Responsible for standardized orientation procedures; documents staff performance on appropriate checklists; and reports progress to respiratory care leadership team.
- Frequent daily interaction through rounding and observation of clinical staff performance to identify performance improvement opportunities.
- Coordinate annual competencies for each staff position and manage required education programs.
- Maintains Educational Files on all staff.
- Collaborate with directors and physicians to identify, research, analyze, and recommend new services/protocols/policies that will enhance the quality of respiratory care services delivered.
- Develop and implement clinical education programs/presentations for current and new respiratory practice.
- Serves as a department and/or specialty care area representative on committees or task forces relating to area of expertise as applicable. Serves as a consultant/liaison to Healthcare team members, patients, families and community.
- Designs and implements data collection tools, metric boards and provides reports for all monitoring and evaluation activities for the department. Conducts clinical quality audits and provides coaching/feedback as needed in a professional manner to caregivers. Conducts time reviews of electronic medical records for standards. Investigations include research, analysis and preparation of written and verbal case summaries with recommendations for further actions. Ability to organize and maintain current investigation information.
- Maintains current knowledge of industry trends, evidence based practice, and performance improvement. Maintains a global perspective of the changing Healthcare environment, at the unit, hospital, local, and national level.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Required:
Education – Associate of Sciences (AS) degree in Respiratory Care
Experience – 3+ years of Acute Respiratory Therapist Experience
Certifications – Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) – National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC); Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) – South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners; Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification – American Heart Association (AHA) – Within 60 days of hire or transfer
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification – American Heart Association (AHA); – Required for caregiver assigned to Adult Specialty Educator role
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Course – American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Healthcare Provider Certification – American Heart Association (AHA) – Required for caregiver assigned to Pediatric/Neonatal Specialty Educator role
Regarding BLS certification: The department you are applying to may require BLS certification sooner than 60 days post transfer/hire. The hiring manager will discuss this with you if it is applicable.
PREFERRED:
Education – Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Health related field
Experience – 1+ years of charge therapist/Respiratory Clinical Specialist Experience
Certification – Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) – National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC); Adult Critical Care Specialty (AACS) – National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC); Neonatal/Pediatric Specialty (NPS) – National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
Physical Requirements:
Medium work – Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissues.
