Tips for Your Clinical Pathologist Job Search
Tailor your CV to subspecialty focus
Your CV should lead with your fellowship training and any subspecialty certifications front and center. Recruiters scanning for a hematopathologist or molecular pathologist want that signal immediately, not buried under general clinical experience.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists clinical pathologist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Search by laboratory type not just title
Reference labs, academic centers, and community hospitals hire for the same title but expect very different skill profiles. Filter your search by setting so you target openings where your case volume and turnaround expectations align with your actual experience.
Document your sign-out volume concretely
Hiring committees compare candidates on case volume. Quantify your annual sign-out numbers, tissue types, and autopsy caseload where applicable. Specific numbers read as credibility, especially when competing against candidates from higher-volume programs.
Prepare for a working interview ahead of time
Many pathology departments include a slide session or virtual microscopy review as part of the interview. Request the subspecialty focus in advance, and practice articulating your differential out loud so you can demonstrate your reasoning process under observation.
Negotiate protected time in your offer
If research or teaching is part of the role, get the protected-time percentage in writing before you sign. Verbal commitments about academic time routinely disappear once clinical volumes increase, so make it a formal term in your contract.
Clinical Pathologist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most clinical pathologists?
The companies hiring the most clinical pathologists right now include Clinical Laboratories of Hawaii, LLP, Baylor College of Medicine, and University of Kentucky, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Academic health systems and national reference laboratory networks tend to post the highest volume of openings at any given time.
How many clinical pathologist jobs are remote?
About 2% of clinical pathologist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with digital pathology roles and laboratory medical director positions most likely to offer location flexibility. Roles requiring direct specimen handling, frozen section coverage, or on-call autopsy service are almost always fully on-site.
How do you become a clinical pathologist?
You complete medical school to earn an MD or DO, then match into a pathology residency accredited by the ACGME, which covers anatomic and clinical pathology training. After residency, you sit for board certification through the American Board of Pathology. Many positions also expect a one- to two-year fellowship in a subspecialty such as molecular pathology, hematopathology, or cytopathology before you apply for attending roles.
Can you get hired as a clinical pathologist with limited attending experience?
Yes, newly boarded pathologists are regularly hired into attending roles, particularly at community hospitals and reference laboratories that value recent training over years of independent practice. Highlighting fellowship case volume, specific procedural competencies, and strong letters from residency program directors helps offset a short attending record when you're applying directly out of training.
What does the clinical pathologist interview process look like?
Most departments start with a phone or video screen with the section chief or medical director, followed by an on-site day that includes meetings with faculty, laboratory staff, and administration. A case-based slide review or virtual microscopy session is standard in many programs. Academic positions typically also require a brief research or quality improvement presentation before the committee makes a recommendation.
Where can I find and apply to clinical pathologist jobs?
You can find and apply to clinical pathologist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from hospital systems, academic medical centers, reference laboratories, and diagnostic companies across the United States. Find roles that match your subspecialty and experience, then apply directly to each listing from the same place.
