Tips for Your Licensed Veterinary Technician Job Search
List every credential you hold
Your resume should name your state license, VTNE passage, and any specialty credentials like VTS or Fear Free certification. Hiring managers screen for these before reading anything else, so put them in a dedicated credentials section near the top.
Tailor your application to practice type
A general practice posting and an emergency hospital posting call for different skill emphasis. Lead with anesthesia and triage experience for emergency roles, and client communication and preventive care for general practice. One resume version rarely fits both well.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists licensed veterinary technician openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Search by setting, not just by title
Filter openings by practice type, such as specialty, research, or mobile, not only by job title. Many high-paying positions use slightly different titles like registered veterinary technician or veterinary nurse, and searching broadly surfaces roles you would otherwise miss.
Prepare for hands-on skills questions
Interviewers at veterinary practices commonly ask you to walk through your catheter placement technique, anesthesia monitoring protocol, or how you handle a fractious patient. Rehearse these out loud before your interview so your answers are specific and confident.
Negotiate with your full compensation picture
When an offer comes in, ask about CE allowance, licensing fee reimbursement, and uniform stipends alongside base pay. These benefits vary widely between corporate groups and independent practices and can shift the total value of an offer substantially.
Licensed Veterinary Technician Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most licensed veterinary technicians?
The most active employers for licensed veterinary technicians right now are Banfield Pet Hospital, BluePearl Pet Hospital, and Ethos Veterinary Health, and the most openings are in New York, Virginia, and Washington, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Demand tends to be highest in metro areas with large corporate veterinary group footprints and academic veterinary medical centers.
How many licensed veterinary technician jobs are remote?
About 1% of licensed veterinary technician openings are fully remote or hybrid as of August 2026, since most roles require hands-on patient care. The sub-areas most compatible with remote work include veterinary telehealth triage, pharmaceutical or medical device sales support, veterinary education, and insurance case review, where patient-side skills translate to off-site consulting.
How do you become a licensed veterinary technician?
You become a licensed veterinary technician by completing an AVMA-accredited associate or bachelor's degree program in veterinary technology, passing the Veterinary Technician National Examination, and then applying for licensure in your state. Some states also require a jurisprudence exam or additional documentation. Requirements vary by state, so check with your state's veterinary medical board for the exact steps.
How do you get hired as a licensed veterinary technician with little experience?
Employers hiring new graduates typically look for strong clinical externship performance, a record of hands-on lab hours in your program, and soft skills like calm patient handling and clear client communication. Targeting general practice or shelter medicine positions first builds the broad technical foundation that specialty and emergency practices expect before hiring. Completing a Fear Free or Low Stress Handling certification before you graduate also makes your application stand out against equally credentialed candidates.
What does the licensed veterinary technician interview process look like?
Most veterinary technician interviews begin with a phone screen focused on your license status and availability, followed by an in-person or video interview with the practice manager or lead technician covering clinical scenarios. Many practices include a working interview or skills assessment where you demonstrate restraint, catheter placement, or anesthesia monitoring. Reference checks and a background screening typically follow before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to licensed veterinary technician jobs?
You can find and apply to licensed veterinary technician jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from practices, emergency hospitals, specialty centers, and corporate groups across the United States. Search for roles that match your credentials and experience level, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
