What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in medical physicist jobs.
- Master's or doctoral degree in medical physics or a closely related field
- American Board of Radiology (ABR) certification or active candidacy
- CAMPEP-accredited residency or graduate program completion
- Proficiency with treatment planning systems such as Eclipse, RayStation, or Monaco
- Experience with linear accelerator QA, commissioning, and acceptance testing
- Familiarity with radiation safety regulations and state licensing requirements
Tips for Your Medical Physicist Job Search
Tailor your CV to ABR board status
Hiring managers in clinical medical physicist roles screen heavily for American Board of Radiology certification or candidacy status. Make your board exam timeline, residency completion date, and any diplomate credentials immediately visible near the top of your CV.
Highlight your treatment planning system experience
Employers routinely require hands-on proficiency with specific software platforms like Eclipse, RayStation, or Monaco. List each system you've used, the clinical context, and the technique types you planned, since generalist claims carry far less weight than specific platform fluency.
Differentiate diagnostic from therapy physics credentials
Many job seekers blur the line between radiation therapy physics and diagnostic imaging physics on applications. Read each posting carefully for the modality focus and align your cover letter and CV metrics, such as QA program ownership or commissioning work, to that specific subspecialty.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists medical physicist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a case study for your commissioning work
Interview panels for medical physicist positions frequently ask candidates to walk through a commissioning or acceptance testing project. Prepare a concise narrative covering your measurement approach, how you handled any equipment anomalies, and what tolerance criteria you applied.
Negotiate relocation support before you accept
Clinical medical physicist openings are concentrated in specific health systems and academic centers, and relocation is common. Confirm whether the employer offers a relocation package during the offer stage, not after you've accepted, since many institutions have a fixed budget allocated per hire.
Medical Physicist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most medical physicists?
The companies hiring the most medical physicists right now include Medpace, Trinity Health, and Atlantic Health, with the largest share of openings in Florida, Ohio, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Academic health systems and large regional cancer networks tend to post the highest volume of openings year-round.
How many medical physicist jobs are remote?
About 9% of medical physicist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on clinical nature of most positions. Sub-specialties with higher remote availability include health physics consulting, regulatory compliance roles, and some medical physics software validation work that does not require direct patient contact.
How do you become a medical physicist?
You earn a graduate degree in medical physics from a CAMPEP-accredited program, complete a CAMPEP-accredited residency in your chosen subspecialty, then sit for the American Board of Radiology written and oral examinations to achieve board certification. Many states also require a separate medical physicist license before you can practice clinically, so confirm your target state's requirements early in your training.
How do you get hired as a medical physicist with little experience?
Completing a CAMPEP-accredited residency is the most direct path, since it replaces the independent clinical experience employers would otherwise require. If you're still in a graduate program, seek out clinical rotations, volunteer for QA projects under a supervising physicist, and build familiarity with at least one major treatment planning system so you can speak concretely to hands-on work in interviews.
What does the medical physicist interview process look like?
Most hiring processes involve an initial phone or video screen with HR or a chief physicist, followed by an on-site day that includes a technical presentation on a project you led, a tour of clinical facilities, and panel interviews with radiation oncologists, dosimetrists, and therapy staff. Some programs add a practical component where you demonstrate proficiency on a planning system or walk through a QA procedure live.
Where can I find and apply to medical physicist jobs?
You can find and apply to medical physicist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your subspecialty, board status, and preferred location, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
