Tips for Your Therapist Job Search
Tailor your license details precisely
List your exact licensure abbreviation, the state it was issued in, and your license number on your resume. Applicant tracking systems filter on these fields, and a mismatch between your listed credential and the job's required license type will screen you out before a human reviews your application.
Highlight your clinical hour count
Many therapist postings require a specific number of supervised clinical hours for licensure eligibility. State your completed and remaining hours explicitly on your resume so hiring managers don't have to guess whether you meet the threshold for their role or setting.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists therapist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target openings by treatment modality
Search for your trained modality by name, such as EMDR, DBT, or motivational interviewing, rather than just 'therapist.' Employers who prioritize a specific approach often bury that requirement deep in the posting, so matching on modality surfaces roles where your training is a genuine differentiator.
Prepare a case conceptualization example
Interviewers in clinical settings routinely ask you to walk through how you would conceptualize and treat a presenting case. Prepare one or two anonymized examples that demonstrate your theoretical orientation, your assessment process, and how you would adjust treatment if initial progress stalls.
Negotiate supervision and continuing education
If you're pre-licensed, ask about the supervision structure, supervisor credentials, and whether the employer covers your licensure exam fees. These terms are negotiable at the offer stage and directly affect how quickly you can reach independent practice.
Therapist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most therapists?
The companies hiring the most therapists right now include Rehab Employee Services, FOX Rehabilitation, and Optum, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is especially concentrated in community mental health organizations, integrated healthcare systems, and outpatient group practices.
How many therapist jobs are remote?
About 3% of therapist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the sustained growth of telehealth platforms since the expansion of audio-video licensure accommodations. Outpatient individual therapy and coaching-adjacent wellness roles make up the largest share of fully remote positions, while school-based and residential roles remain predominantly in-person.
How do you become a therapist?
You become a therapist by earning a master's or doctoral degree in a clinical field such as counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy. After graduating, you complete a period of supervised post-degree clinical hours required by your state licensing board, then pass your licensure exam. Some states require a provisional license during the supervised hours phase before you can apply for full independent licensure.
How do you get hired as a therapist with little experience?
You can get hired as a therapist with limited experience by applying to roles that explicitly welcome associate-level or pre-licensed candidates, which are common in community mental health centers, nonprofits, and group practices that provide built-in supervision. Emphasizing your practicum and internship placements, any specialized population experience, and your clinical hours completed signals readiness to employers who routinely hire and develop early-career clinicians.
What does the therapist interview process look like?
The therapist interview process typically begins with a phone screen by a recruiter or clinical director, followed by a structured in-person or video interview covering your theoretical orientation, experience with specific populations, and how you handle clinical crises. Many employers include a case conceptualization exercise or a scenario-based question to assess your clinical reasoning. References from clinical supervisors are almost always required before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to therapist jobs?
You can find and apply to therapist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the listings to find roles that match your license type, specialization, and preferred setting, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
