Tips for Your Thoracic Surgeon Job Search
Tailor your CV to operative volume
Thoracic surgery committees review case logs closely. Break out your VATS, robotic-assisted, and open thoracotomy numbers separately so reviewers can assess your minimally invasive experience without having to ask during the interview.
Highlight fellowship subspecialty clearly
Whether your training emphasized general thoracic, cardiac, or congenital, name it explicitly in your CV header and cover letter. Many programs filter applications by subspecialty before a search committee ever reviews credentials.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists thoracic surgeon openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Research program case mix before interviews
Before your interview, learn whether the program skews toward oncologic resections, lung transplants, or cardiac procedures. Interviewers notice when candidates can speak directly to how their experience complements the existing team's volume and gaps.
Prepare a concise outcomes summary
Credentialing committees and medical staff offices often request complication rates and mortality data. Having a clean one-page outcomes summary ready before an offer stage speeds up privileging and signals you take quality metrics seriously.
Negotiate call structure alongside compensation
Call frequency varies widely in thoracic surgery programs. Before accepting an offer, clarify call ratios, APP support on overnight cases, and how emergent cases are triaged, since these factors affect long-term sustainability more than base salary alone.
Thoracic Surgeon Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most thoracic surgeons?
The companies hiring the most thoracic surgeons right now include Allina Health, City of Hope, and CommonSpirit Health, with the largest share of openings in Maryland, Illinois, and Minnesota, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Academic medical centers and large regional health systems consistently account for the majority of active postings.
How many thoracic surgeon jobs are remote?
About 0% of thoracic surgeon openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how procedural the role is. The sub-areas most likely to include remote or hybrid components are telehealth follow-up consultations, second-opinion reads, and academic research or education roles where clinical volume is lower.
How do you become a thoracic surgeon?
You complete medical school, followed by a general surgery residency, then apply to an accredited cardiothoracic surgery fellowship, which runs one to three years depending on the pathway. After fellowship, you sit for board certification through the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Some surgeons pursue subspecialty training in congenital or transplant surgery after their initial certification.
How do you get hired as a thoracic surgeon with limited attending experience?
Programs hiring early-career thoracic surgeons typically value strong fellowship operative volume and a clear subspecialty focus over years of independent practice. Targeting academic centers with structured mentorship, applying to programs building out a new service line, and being transparent about your case distribution all strengthen your candidacy when your attending experience is limited.
What does the thoracic surgeon interview process look like?
Most programs run a two-stage process: an initial phone or video screen with the department chair or recruitment coordinator, followed by an in-person visit that includes meetings with faculty, hospital administration, and medical staff leadership. You may be asked to present a clinical or research case. Credentialing paperwork and reference checks typically follow a verbal offer.
Where can I find and apply to thoracic surgeon jobs?
You can find and apply to thoracic surgeon jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that fit your subspecialty, experience level, and preferred location, then apply directly to each listing from the same page.
