- Master's degree in social work (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited program
- Active state clinical licensure at the LMSW, LCSW, or equivalent level

Tips for Your Clinical Social Work Job Search
Tailor your resume to licensure level
Hiring managers screen by licensure first, so list your LMSW, LCSW, or LCSW-C prominently at the top of your resume. Include your state of licensure, issue date, and any supervision hours completed toward the next tier.
Highlight your clinical modalities by name
Employers want to see specific approaches, not just 'counseling experience.' Name the modalities you're trained in, such as CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, or trauma-focused CBT, and note the populations you've applied them with.
Filter openings by your supervision status
Many postings require independent licensure and won't offer supervision hours. If you're pre-licensed, filter your search to roles that explicitly offer clinical supervision so you're not applying to positions you can't hold.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists clinical social work openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare case presentation answers in advance
Clinical social work interviews often include a case vignette or scenario question. Practice walking through your assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning process out loud before the interview so your clinical reasoning is clear and structured.
Negotiate continuing education benefits directly
Many clinical social work roles offer CE reimbursement, licensure renewal support, or supervision stipends that aren't listed in the base compensation. Ask about these specifically during offer negotiations, since they directly affect your licensure maintenance costs.
Clinical Social Work Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most clinical social works?
The companies hiring the most clinical social works right now include LifeStance Health, RHA Health Services, and North Suffolk Community Services, with the largest share of openings in Massachusetts, California, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is consistently strongest in health systems, community mental health organizations, and government-funded social service agencies.
How many clinical social work jobs are remote?
About 13% of clinical social work openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the broader shift to telehealth delivery. Telehealth therapy roles and care coordination positions for insurance or managed care organizations tend to have the highest remote availability, while direct inpatient and school-based roles remain predominantly on-site.
How do you become a clinical social work?
You start by earning a Master of Social Work degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. After graduating, you work under a licensed supervisor to accumulate the required post-degree clinical hours, which vary by state. Once you complete those hours, you sit for the ASWB Clinical exam and apply for your state clinical license.
How do you get hired in clinical social work with little experience?
Field placements and practicum hours from your MSW program count as direct clinical experience on your resume, so list them with specific population and modality details. Target roles that offer supervision hours, since those positions are built for pre-licensed candidates. Emphasize transferable skills from related work such as case management, crisis line work, or residential support, and obtain any additional certifications relevant to your target population.
What does the clinical social work interview process look like?
Most clinical social work interviews begin with a phone or video screen focused on your licensure status and clinical background. A second round with the hiring supervisor or clinical director typically includes behavioral questions about your practice and a case vignette or scenario exercise to assess your assessment and treatment planning skills. Some employers also require reference checks with former clinical supervisors before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to clinical social work jobs?
You can find and apply to clinical social work jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search for roles that match your licensure level, specialization, and preferred setting, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
