What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in mental health jobs.
- Master's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a related clinical field
- Active state licensure such as LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or equivalent credential
- Experience conducting individual, group, or family therapy sessions
- Proficiency with electronic health record systems for documentation and treatment planning
- Knowledge of evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT, or trauma-informed care
- Ability to complete clinical assessments, crisis evaluations, and progress notes on deadline
Tips for Your Mental Health Job Search
List every licensure clearly up front
Put your license type, state, and expiration date in a dedicated credentials section near the top of your resume. Hiring managers in mental health screen for licensure before reading anything else, so burying it under education costs you interviews.
Target openings by population you serve
Filter your job search by the population you're trained to treat, whether that's adolescents, adults with serious mental illness, or substance use disorders. Employers write job descriptions around those specialties, so matching your language to theirs gets your application past initial screening.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists mental health openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Quantify caseload and outcomes on your resume
Hiring managers want to know how many clients you managed weekly and what your discharge or goal-attainment rates looked like. Numbers like caseload size and session completion rates make your experience concrete in a field where impact is otherwise hard to measure on paper.
Prepare clinical scenario answers before interviewing
Mental health interviews almost always include vignette questions asking how you'd handle a client in crisis or an ethical conflict. Practice structured responses using specific frameworks you were trained in, such as safety planning protocols or motivational interviewing, so your answers demonstrate clinical reasoning under pressure.
Negotiate supervision hours into your offer
If you're working toward full licensure, the number of supervised hours a role provides each month is a negotiable part of your offer. Ask during the offer stage how many hours are guaranteed and whether the supervisor holds the license your state requires for sign-off.
Mental Health Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most mental health professionals?
The companies hiring the most mental health professionals right now include LifeStance Health, Aspen Dental, and Behavioral Health Practice Services, with the largest share of openings in Massachusetts, New York, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Health systems, community mental health centers, and outpatient group practices consistently drive the highest volume of postings.
How many mental health jobs are remote?
About 12% of mental health openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the growth of telehealth across the sector. Outpatient therapy, psychiatric medication management, and care coordination roles are the most likely to be fully remote, while crisis services and inpatient positions almost always require on-site presence.
How do you become a mental health professional?
Start with a bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, or a related field, then complete a master's program in clinical counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy. After graduating, log the supervised clinical hours your state requires, pass the relevant licensure exam, and apply for your state license before practicing independently.
Can you get hired in mental health with little experience?
Yes, entry-level roles in mental health such as behavioral health technician, case manager, or crisis line counselor regularly hire candidates with a bachelor's degree and no prior clinical experience. Highlighting any practicum placements, volunteer crisis work, or peer support training makes your application competitive for these positions even without a long clinical history.
What does the mental health interview process look like?
Most mental health interviews include a phone screen with HR, followed by a panel interview with clinical supervisors or department leads. Expect at least one clinical vignette question where you walk through how you'd assess or treat a specific situation. Some employers add a writing sample, a shadowing shift, or a second interview with a program director before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to mental health jobs?
You can find and apply to mental health jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your licensure, specialty, and preferred setting, then apply directly to each position that fits.
