Tips for Your Cardiac Surgeon Job Search
Tailor your CV to case volume
Hiring committees at cardiac programs want to see your annual case volume broken down by procedure type. List your numbers for CABG, valve repair, TAVR assistance, and complex re-operations separately so reviewers can assess fit without guessing.
Verify your board certification status
Many listings require active board certification from the American Board of Thoracic Surgery before the application closes. Confirm your certificate is current and that your primary state license is in good standing before you apply to any opening.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists cardiac surgeon openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by program type
Academic centers and community hospitals have fundamentally different expectations. Academic roles often require research output and fellow supervision, while community programs prioritize throughput and call coverage. Decide which fits your goals before you apply.
Prepare for the credentialing conversation
Almost every cardiac surgery interview includes a discussion of your credentialing history. Know your privilege status at current and prior institutions, and be ready to speak plainly about any peer review or proctoring requirements you have completed.
Negotiate start date and call structure
Cardiac surgery offers often have more flexibility on call schedule and partnership timelines than on base compensation. Ask specifically about the call ratio, night coverage structure, and the timeline to partnership or tenure during the final offer stage.
Cardiac Surgeon Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most cardiac surgeons?
The companies hiring the most cardiac surgeons right now include Lifebridge Health, SIU Medicine, and University Of Washington, with the largest share of openings in Maryland, Connecticut, and Washington, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Large academic medical systems and regional heart centers consistently account for the majority of active postings.
How many cardiac surgeon jobs are remote?

The sub-areas most compatible with remote or telehealth components include pre-operative consultations, post-operative follow-up care, and second-opinion case reviews.
How do you become a cardiac surgeon?
Becoming a cardiac surgeon requires completing a four-year medical degree, a general surgery residency, and then a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship, which typically focuses on adult cardiac, congenital, or combined thoracic procedures. After training, you must obtain a state medical license, pursue board certification through the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and secure hospital privileges before practicing independently.
How do you get hired as a cardiac surgeon with limited experience?
Candidates finishing fellowship can strengthen their applications by documenting case logs in detail, securing strong letters from program directors who can speak to operative independence, and targeting community hospitals or growing regional programs that are actively building their cardiac surgery capacity. Fellowship research publications and any advanced procedural training, such as robotic or transcatheter techniques, can differentiate you from other early-career applicants.
What does the cardiac surgeon interview process look like?
The cardiac surgery interview process typically begins with a phone or video screening with the department chief or medical director, followed by an on-site visit that includes meetings with cardiac surgery leadership, cardiology partners, anesthesia, and hospital administration. You will likely be asked to present a case or research talk, discuss your operative experience and philosophy, and tour the OR and ICU facilities before receiving a formal offer.
