Tips for Your Medical Laboratory Technician Job Search
List your certifications before experience
Hiring managers in clinical labs scan for ASCP or AMT credentials before reading your work history. Put your certification acronym, issuing body, and renewal date in a dedicated section at the top of your resume, not buried at the bottom.
Tailor your resume to the analyzer
Many postings name the specific analyzers in use, such as Sysmex, Beckman Coulter, or Abbott Alinity. Match your resume language to the exact instrument names in each posting so your application clears automated screening before a human reads it.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists medical laboratory technician openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target shift preferences in your search
Labs hire heavily for nights, weekends, and rotating shifts that go unfilled longer than day positions. Filtering for those shifts often surfaces openings with less competition, which can be a practical entry point if you're building experience or changing specializations.
Prepare for a competency-based interview format
Many hospital systems use structured behavioral questions tied to CLIA compliance and quality control. Practice answering questions about a time you caught a QC failure or handled a critical value call, using specific details about the specimen type and your corrective steps.
Negotiate shift differentials, not just base pay
Total compensation for lab roles often varies more through shift differentials and on-call pay than through base adjustments. Ask HR for the differential structure for evenings, nights, and weekends before accepting an offer so you can compare positions accurately.
Medical Laboratory Technician Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most medical laboratory technicians?
The companies hiring the most medical laboratory technicians right now include Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), and Indiana University Health, with the largest share of openings in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Health systems with large inpatient volumes and national reference laboratory networks consistently post the highest number of openings.
How many medical laboratory technician jobs are remote?
About 0% of medical laboratory technician openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most clinical lab work. Remote opportunities are most common in roles focused on pathology report review, laboratory information systems support, and telehealth-adjacent quality assurance functions rather than direct specimen processing.
How do you become a medical laboratory technician?
To become a medical laboratory technician, complete an accredited associate degree program in clinical or medical laboratory science, which includes both classroom instruction and clinical rotations in a working lab. After graduating, sit for a national certification exam through ASCP or AMT. Most employers require or strongly prefer certification before hiring, and some states mandate licensure as well, so check your state's requirements before applying.
Can you get hired as a medical laboratory technician with little or no experience?
Yes, entry-level medical laboratory technician positions exist, particularly in reference labs and hospital systems that run training programs for new graduates. Your clinical rotation hours count as hands-on experience and should be listed on your resume with the instruments used and test volumes processed. Applying for night or weekend shifts and obtaining ASCP certification before your job search both improve your chances when your paid experience is limited.
What does the medical laboratory technician interview process look like?
Most medical laboratory technician interviews begin with a phone or video screen focused on certification status and shift availability, followed by an in-person interview with the lab manager and sometimes a senior technician. Expect competency-based questions about handling critical values, resolving QC failures, and maintaining chain of custody for specimens. Some employers include a brief practical skills assessment or a tour of the department before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to medical laboratory technician jobs?
You can find and apply to medical laboratory technician jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your certifications, specialization, and preferred shift, then apply directly to each position that fits. No setup is needed to start applying.
