Tips for Your Pulmonary Function Technologist Job Search
List every credentialed test you perform
Your resume should name the specific tests you're trained to administer, including spirometry, DLCO, body plethysmography, and bronchial challenge. Hiring managers screen for these terms directly, so generic phrases like 'pulmonary diagnostics' won't surface your application.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists pulmonary function technologist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target job postings by lab setting
Hospital-based labs, outpatient clinics, and research institutions each prioritize different skills. Search with setting-specific terms like 'pulmonary function lab' or 'respiratory diagnostics clinic' to find openings that match your actual day-to-day experience rather than applying broadly.
Highlight CPFT or RPFT credential status
Many postings explicitly require or prefer National Board for Respiratory Care credentials. List your CPFT or RPFT designation in your resume header and your certifications section, not just buried in a summary paragraph, so screeners catch it immediately.
Prepare to walk through a case during interviews
Interviewers often ask you to describe how you'd handle a patient who can't complete a maneuver or produces inconsistent results. Practice explaining your quality control process out loud, referencing ATS and ERS acceptability and repeatability criteria, so your answer is precise and confident.
Negotiate around equipment and lab volume
Before accepting an offer, ask which spirometry and plethysmography systems the lab uses and how many studies are performed daily. These details affect both your daily workload and how quickly your skills stay current, and they're fair and expected questions at the offer stage.
Pulmonary Function Technologist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most pulmonary function technologists?
The companies hiring the most pulmonary function technologists right now include National Jewish Health, Geisinger, and Geisinger Health Plan, with the largest share of openings in Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Georgia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Academic medical centers and large health systems consistently account for the majority of active postings.
How many pulmonary function technologist jobs are remote?
About 0% of pulmonary function technologist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is low relative to other healthcare roles because most testing requires in-person patient contact. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote components are data interpretation, quality review, and telehealth respiratory consultation roles within larger health systems.
How do you become a pulmonary function technologist?
Most pulmonary function technologists start by completing an accredited respiratory therapy program and earning an associate or bachelor's degree. After gaining clinical experience in respiratory diagnostics, candidates sit for the Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist exam through the National Board for Respiratory Care. Some technologists advance to the Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist credential, which requires additional experience and a more comprehensive examination.
Can you get hired as a pulmonary function technologist without experience?
Entry-level positions do exist, particularly at teaching hospitals and large health systems that train new technologists on the job, but most postings expect at least some clinical background. Completing a respiratory therapy program with a pulmonary diagnostics rotation, volunteering in a pulmonary lab during school, or applying to technician assistant roles that transition into full testing responsibilities are the most reliable paths in without direct prior experience.
What does the pulmonary function technologist interview process look like?
Most hiring processes involve an initial phone screen with HR, followed by a technical interview or skills assessment with the lab director or chief technologist. You'll likely be asked to describe your testing methodology, explain how you ensure quality control, and walk through how you handle uncooperative or medically complex patients. Some facilities include a brief practical demonstration or shadow shift before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to pulmonary function technologist jobs?
