Job Summary
The Pulmonary Function Technologist provides non-invasive testing of patient lung function as it relates to size, airway resistance, diffusion capacities and exhaled Nitric Oxide levels. Also measured are responses to bronchodilators, antagonistic medications as well as exercise induced airway reactivity. Oxygen Oximetry with exercise, and Overnight O2 measurements are also provided.
Essential Functions
- Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
- Demonstrates knowledge of accepted standards, policies, procedures, staff responsibilities and instrumentation related to provision of diagnostic pulmonary function testing.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the calibration and operation of laboratory equipment and performance of diagnostic pulmonary function testing.
- Demonstrates proficiency in patient assessment, clinical aerosol delivery and emergency management procedures related to performance of diagnostic pulmonary function testing.
- Provides appropriate instruction/education to patients, family members and physicians.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Associate Degree Must be a graduate of an AMA approved program for Respiratory Therapy. Required
- Demonstrate Excellent Customer Service Skills
- Able to understand and communicate (spoken/written) English
- Detailed orientated and possesses strong organizational skills
- Able to deal professionally and efficiently with all staff and levels of management and external customers
- Self-starter, self-motivated and able to work independently
- Flexible, organized and able to assess priorities
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may only be a negligible amount, a job is in this category when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
- Respiratory Therapists - New York State Board of Respiratory Therapy NYS RT License Required and
- NBRC-RRT_Registered Respiratory Therapist - NATIONAL BOARD FOR RESPIRATORY CARE (NBRC) NBRC RRT. Credentials obtained after July 1, 2002, must be maintained through the Credential Maintenance Program of the NBRC. This program does not affect credentials achieved before July 1, 2002 Required and
- BLS Basic Life Support - American Heart Association Required and
- ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support - American Heart Association Required and
- CPFT or RPFT specialty credential preferred
