What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in certified veterinary technician jobs.
- Credentialed Veterinary Technician status through NAVTA or equivalent state credentialing body
- Active state license or registration required prior to start date
- Proficiency in anesthesia monitoring, IV catheter placement, and venipuncture
- Experience operating digital radiography equipment and reading diagnostic imaging
- Ability to calculate and administer controlled substances under veterinarian supervision
- Strong client communication skills for explaining treatment plans and discharge instructions
Tips for Your Certified Veterinary Technician Job Search
List your NAVLE and state license clearly
Put your NAVTA-credentialed CVT status and the state where you hold your license in the top section of your resume. Hiring managers screen for this before reading anything else, so burying it below your work history costs you callbacks.
Highlight species and equipment experience specifically
Name the species you've worked with and the equipment you can operate, such as digital radiography, anesthesia machines, or ultrasound. Generic phrases like 'clinical experience' don't differentiate you from candidates who lack hands-on proficiency.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists certified veterinary technician openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings that match your specialty area
Filter openings by practice type, whether that's general, emergency, oncology, or exotics. Applying to a role that matches your specialty lets you speak precisely to what the team needs rather than presenting yourself as a generalist.
Prepare case-based answers for clinical interviews
Interviewers at veterinary clinics often ask how you've handled a patient in crisis or a controlled substance discrepancy. Walk through your actual decision-making process, not just outcomes, to show clinical judgment alongside technical skill.
Negotiate shift structure alongside compensation
Emergency and specialty practices frequently run rotating or overnight schedules. Before accepting an offer, confirm the exact shift pattern and on-call expectations so the role fits your availability and you're not surprised after your first week.
Certified Veterinary Technician Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most certified veterinary technicians?
The companies hiring the most certified veterinary technicians right now include Banfield Pet Hospital, Petco, and Ethos Veterinary Health, with the largest share of openings in Florida, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Multi-location specialty and emergency groups tend to post the highest volume of openings at any given time.
How many certified veterinary technician jobs are remote?
About 0% of certified veterinary technician openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is low compared to most other healthcare roles. Remote opportunities tend to concentrate in telemedicine triage, client education coordination, and veterinary records review rather than direct patient care positions.
How do you become a certified veterinary technician?
You complete an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program, which results in an associate or bachelor's degree. After graduating, you pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination, commonly called the NAVLE. You then apply for licensure or registration in the state where you plan to work, since each state sets its own credentialing requirements and renewal rules.
Can you get hired as a certified veterinary technician with little experience?
Yes, many clinics hire newly credentialed technicians who completed externships during their AVMA-accredited program. Highlighting the species you worked with, the procedures you performed under supervision, and any emergency or specialty rotations you completed helps offset a short work history. General practice and relief positions are typically the most accessible entry points for new graduates.
What does the certified veterinary technician interview process look like?
Most hiring processes start with a phone screen to verify credentials and confirm schedule availability. A working interview or skills assessment at the clinic often follows, where you may place a catheter, restrain a patient, or run bloodwork under observation. A final conversation with the lead technician or practice manager typically covers case-handling philosophy, team dynamics, and shift expectations before an offer is made.
Where can I find and apply to certified veterinary technician jobs?
You can find and apply to certified veterinary technician jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings for roles that match your credentials, specialty area, and preferred practice type, then apply directly to each one that fits.
