Tips for Your Periodontist Job Search
Tailor your CV to each practice type
Private solo practices want clinical efficiency and patient volume experience, while academic centers weight research output and teaching. Reframe your experience to match the setting, not just the specialty. A one-size CV loses ground to candidates who mirror the employer's priorities.
Highlight implant case volume specifically
Many listings now filter for implant experience before a phone screen. Quantify your surgical case log by procedure type where your program allows. Reviewers who scan dozens of CVs stop on concrete volume, not on phrases like 'extensive implant experience.'
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists periodontist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Research the payer mix before your interview
Practices differ sharply on fee-for-service versus insurance-heavy patient bases, and interviewers notice when you ask informed questions about it. Knowing a group's payer mix signals clinical business awareness and separates you from candidates focused only on surgical technique.
Prepare a structured case presentation for interviews
Many periodontal group practices and DSOs include a case presentation round. Choose two or three cases that show your treatment planning reasoning across complexity levels. Walk interviewers through your diagnosis, surgical rationale, and long-term maintenance plan.
Negotiate your buy-in timeline during the offer stage
Partnership and equity tracks are often negotiable at offer, not after you start. Ask directly about the buy-in structure, evaluation period, and what production benchmarks trigger the transition. Leaving this conversation to your first review can cost you leverage.
Periodontist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most periodontists?
The companies hiring the most periodontists right now include ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers, University of the Pacific, and 42 North Dental, with the largest share of openings in New York, New Jersey, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is strongest at multi-specialty group practices and dental service organizations that maintain dedicated periodontics departments.
How many periodontist jobs are remote?
About 0% of periodontist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on surgical nature of the specialty. The roles with any remote component tend to be in tele-consultation, second-opinion review, or clinical education and training rather than direct patient care.
How do you become a periodontist?
You complete a four-year dental school program to earn a DDS or DMD, then apply to a Commission on Dental Accreditation-accredited periodontics residency, which runs for three years of advanced clinical and surgical training. After residency, you obtain a state dental license, and most practicing periodontists pursue board certification through the American Board of Periodontology to strengthen their candidacy with employers.
Can you get hired as a periodontist with limited experience?
New residency graduates are regularly hired into associate periodontist roles, particularly at group practices and dental service organizations that structure mentorship into the position. Employers hiring new graduates focus on your surgical case log from residency, your board eligibility status, and your comfort with the procedures the practice emphasizes, such as implant placement or osseous surgery, rather than years in independent practice.
What does the periodontist interview process look like?
Most practices begin with a phone or video call to confirm credentials and discuss practice fit, followed by an in-person day that includes a facility tour, meetings with clinical staff, and a conversation with the lead dentist or managing partner. Many group practices and DSOs add a case presentation round where you walk through two or three surgical cases. The final stage typically involves an offer discussion that covers clinical expectations and compensation structure.
Where can I find and apply to periodontist jobs?
