How do I get a senior level thoracic surgeon job?
Employers at this level look for surgeons who have moved beyond supervised practice into independent clinical leadership, with a portfolio of complex cases, outcomes data, and demonstrated program ownership. At this experience level, hiring is driven primarily by academic medical centers, large regional health systems, and specialty surgical groups expanding their cardiothoracic programs.
Are there remote senior level thoracic surgeon jobs?
Yes, though most roles at this level require a significant on-site surgical presence. About 0% of senior level thoracic surgeon openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions typically involve telemedicine consultations, second-opinion services, or administrative and program leadership responsibilities rather than direct operative work.
What makes a thoracic surgeon role senior level?
Senior level thoracic surgeon roles are defined by independent clinical authority, not just experience volume. These positions involve leading complex cases without supervision, setting surgical protocols, contributing to quality and outcomes oversight, and formally mentoring residents or fellows. Surgeons at this stage are expected to shape program direction and take accountability for departmental performance alongside their clinical workload.
