Therapist Jobs in Pittsburgh: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a therapist job in Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh's strongest hiring comes from its large academic medical systems in Oakland, community mental health agencies serving neighborhoods like the Hill District and Homewood, and private group practices concentrated in Shadyside and the East End. Candidates with experience in trauma, substance use disorders, or dual-diagnosis care tend to stand out locally. Supervised hours that align with Pennsylvania licensure requirements and familiarity with Pittsburgh's community-based service networks give applicants a real edge.
Which companies hire therapists in Pittsburgh?
Employers hiring therapists in Pittsburgh right now include UPMC, Allegheny Health Network, and Net Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Pittsburgh's hiring pool is broad, covering large hospital networks anchored in Oakland, nonprofit behavioral health agencies, school-based programs, and independent group practices spread across the city's neighborhoods.
Are there remote therapist jobs in Pittsburgh?
Yes, though remote availability depends heavily on the type of therapy work. About 41% of therapist openings tied to Pittsburgh are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting telehealth growth since the pandemic. Outpatient individual and group therapy roles are most likely to offer remote or hybrid schedules, while school-based, residential, and crisis intervention positions in Pittsburgh are almost always on-site.
How can I get a therapist job in Pittsburgh with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Pittsburgh is through internship-to-hire pipelines at community mental health centers, which routinely bring on provisionally licensed clinicians and recent graduates. Pittsburgh nonprofits serving underserved neighborhoods, school districts in Allegheny County, and residential treatment facilities often hire at the entry level when candidates demonstrate clinical hours and cultural competency. Roles like case manager, mental health technician, or outpatient intern are common stepping stones that lead to full therapist positions locally.
Which industries hire the most therapists in Pittsburgh?
Most therapist openings in Pittsburgh sit in Healthcare & Medical Services, Technology & Software, and Insurance, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Pittsburgh's identity as a healthcare and education hub, anchored by major hospital systems and universities in Oakland, drives consistent demand across those sectors throughout the year.
