UPMC Shadyside, an NCI-designated cancer center, is looking for a full-time Clinical Pharmacist to join their inpatient Oncology team. This position will be scheduled to work shifts from Monday to Friday, with satellite coverage after 5pm and a rotating remote weekend schedule. Along with a flexible schedule, there are no research, teaching, or staffing requirements involved with this role.
We are looking for a clinical pharmacist with extensive clinical experience within oncology as well as a working knowledge of aspects of evidence-based medicine, pathway/guideline development, oncology policy development, oncology reimbursement and coverage, clinical research, and drug development. The dispensing of medications is not within the scope of this position. The goal is to provide optimal pharmaceutical care by acting as a consultant to both the inpatient healthcare team and the patient/caregiver. The position is a rotating role with both oncology and malignant hematology inpatient services. UPMC Shadyside is the primary site for inpatient hematology/oncology care including stem cell transplant, CART therapy, and various clinical trials for patients being treated at UPMC Hillman Cancer Centers, an NCI-designated cancer center. PURPOSE:
Assist the Director as assigned in all aspects of Pharmacy Services within UPMC Shadyside Hospital. This primarily includes providing clinical services to the staff of the inpatient hematology/oncology/cellular therapy program. The clinical pharmacist has extensive clinical experience within oncology as well as a working knowledge of aspects of evidence-based medicine, pathway/guideline development, oncology policy development, oncology reimbursement and coverage, clinical research, and drug development. The dispensing of medications is not within the scope of this position.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for providing pharmaceutical care for the UPMC Shadyside inpatient hematology/oncology/cellular therapy services via direct communication or email.
- Assist with managing narrow therapeutic and highly toxic drugs in individuals based on comorbidities, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, altered metabolism, and elimination, based on renal and/or hepatic function, by directing, monitoring, and maintaining therapeutic drug serum concentrations to prevent excessive and unwanted toxicity and outcomes.
- Provide disease state and drug therapy education for UPMC Shadyside and UPMC Hillman Cancer Centers physicians and staff. This may include written reviews, teaching didactic lectures, conducting continuing education lectures, and facilitating small group topic discussions.
- Direct and manage supportive care management of patients (anti-emetics, pain control, growth factors, anti-microbial prophylaxis, prevention of tumor lysis syndrome, etc.)
- Advise in the administration of dangerous and toxic bio-immunotherapies and bio-chemotherapies.
- Communicate with fellow UPMC Shadyside clinical pharmacists, including oncology and non-oncology, to ensure an effective continuum of care for the patients.
- Assist with the decision-making process in the selection of appropriate evidence-based prophylaxis, chemotherapeutic, and supportive care regimens based on the extent of disease, patient performance status, and desired outcome for the treatment of a variety of malignant and nonmalignant conditions including patient-specific and system-wide treatment plans.
- Plan for and direct the treatment of chemotherapy spills, extravasation of vesicants and irritants, and management of hypersensitivity/anaphylactic reactions based on established system-wide policies and procedures.
- Facilitate compliance with Cancer Centers' directives by evaluating and overseeing the appropriate use of high-cost and highly toxic therapies to assure suitable control of drug budgets and reimbursement. This includes knowledge of national and local health policy directives.
- Precept PGY2 oncology pharmacy residents and PGY1 residents completing elective oncology learning experiences.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- B.S. degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D.) is required.
- PGY2 residency and/or equivalent clinical experience is required.
- Hematology/oncology/stem cell transplant training and/or experience is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Extensive knowledge of clinical research, drug development, and research regulations within institutions is preferred.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATIONS, AND CLEARANCES:
- A Pharmacist License is required.
- Act 34 is required.
- BCOP Certification is preferred (may be in progress if recent completion of PGY2 residency).
