Clinical Pharmacist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a clinical pharmacist in California?
To become a clinical pharmacist in California, you must earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited program, pass the NAPLEX and MPJE licensing exams, and obtain an active license from the California State Board of Pharmacy. Most hospital and health-system roles also expect completion of a PGY1 residency, and specialty positions in oncology or critical care often require a PGY2 residency or board certification before hire.
How much do clinical pharmacists make in California?
Clinical pharmacists in California earn a median of about $164,610 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $90,560 for the lowest 10% to over $213,820 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire clinical pharmacists in California?
Employers hiring clinical pharmacists in California right now include Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals, ADARx Pharmaceuticals, and City of Hope, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated health networks, academic medical centers, and specialty pharmacy operations generate some of the most consistent clinical pharmacist demand in the country.
Which California cities have the most clinical pharmacist jobs?
The cities with the most clinical pharmacist openings in California are San Diego, Palo Alto, and Carlsbad. Los Angeles and the Bay Area drive volume through their dense concentration of academic medical centers, large health systems, and specialty pharmacy networks, while San Diego contributes steady demand through its research hospital campuses and biotech-affiliated clinical programs.
Are there remote clinical pharmacist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're limited. Clinical pharmacy is primarily a patient-facing, on-site discipline, so fully remote positions are a small share of total openings. About 13% of clinical pharmacist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. The sub-specialties most likely to offer remote work include medication therapy management, telepharmacy clinical review, and utilization management roles within payer or pharmacy benefit organizations.
How can I get hired as a clinical pharmacist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a PGY1 pharmacy residency, and large California health systems such as Kaiser Permanente, UCSF Health, and Cedars-Sinai run ASHP-accredited programs that recruit new PharmD graduates directly. Staff pharmacist roles at California hospital networks and retail-to-clinical transition programs also serve as common stepping stones. Holding an active California Board of Pharmacy license and any clinical rotation experience in a California acute care setting gives candidates a measurable edge in local hiring.
Where can I find and apply to clinical pharmacist jobs in California?
