Hospitalist Physician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a hospitalist physician in California?
To practice as a hospitalist physician in California, you must hold a valid physician and surgeon license issued by the Medical Board of California, which requires completion of medical school, an accredited residency in internal medicine or family medicine, and passing the USMLE or COMLEX steps. Most California hospital systems also require board certification. The Medical Board of California oversees initial licensure, renewal, and any disciplinary matters for all practicing physicians in the state.
How much do hospitalist physicians make in California?
Hospitalist physicians in California earn a median of about $313,890 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,180 for the lowest 10% to over $441,710 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire hospitalist physicians in California?
Employers hiring hospitalist physicians in California right now include Sutter Health, Sound Physicians, and Vituity, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's scale and mix of academic medical centers, large integrated systems, and independent community hospitals means consistent demand across a wide range of employer types and practice settings.
Which California cities have the most hospitalist physician jobs?
Sacramento, Davis, and Fresno have the most hospitalist physician openings in California. Los Angeles and the Bay Area drive volume through their concentration of major health systems and academic teaching hospitals, while San Diego's combination of military medical facilities, large regional systems, and a growing research hospital sector supports steady demand even relative to its smaller population.
Are there remote hospitalist physician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Hospitalist physicians provide direct bedside care in inpatient settings, which means nearly all positions require physical presence on the unit. About 22% of hospitalist physician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those exceptions tend to involve tele-hospitalist or overnight telemedicine coverage roles rather than traditional inpatient attending positions.
How can I get hired as a hospitalist physician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly out of residency, as California's major systems including Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, and UCSF Health regularly recruit new graduates into structured hospitalist programs that include mentorship and supervised ramp-up periods. Completing your residency at a California-affiliated training program, obtaining your Medical Board of California license early, and pursuing board certification as soon as eligible all strengthen a new-grad application. Transitioning from a chief resident or academic co-management role within the same system is another common door-opener at larger institutions.
Where can I find and apply to hospitalist physician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to hospitalist physician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to California locations. Find the roles that fit your credentials and target practice setting, then apply directly to the ones that match.
