Medical Oncologist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a medical oncologist in California?
To practice as a medical oncologist in California you must hold an active license from the Medical Board of California, which requires completing medical school, a residency in internal medicine, and an accredited hematology-oncology fellowship. After fellowship, most California health systems require board certification or active pursuit of certification through the American Board of Internal Medicine. A DEA registration and California Controlled Substance certificate are also required before you can prescribe.
How much do medical oncologists make in California?
Medical oncologists in California earn a median of about $125,550 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,250 for the lowest 10% to over $203,350 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire medical oncologists in California?
Employers hiring medical oncologists in California right now include OneOncology, City of Hope, and Ethos Veterinary Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of NCI-designated cancer centers, large integrated systems, and growing outpatient oncology networks means consistent openings across both academic and community settings.
Which California cities have the most medical oncologist jobs?
San Francisco, Corona, and Duarte have the most medical oncologist openings in California. Los Angeles and San Francisco anchor hiring through major academic medical centers and large integrated health systems, while San Diego's presence of research hospitals and biotech-affiliated oncology clinics drives demand there, and smaller metros often reflect regional cancer centers or multi-site system expansions.
Are there remote medical oncologist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 4% of medical oncologist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that the role is fundamentally hands-on and patient-facing. The portions most likely to be performed remotely are tumor board consultations, second-opinion review, and genomic case discussions within telehealth-enabled oncology programs.
How can I get hired as a medical oncologist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly for a first-attending or junior staff oncologist role at a large California health system immediately upon completing fellowship. Institutions such as Kaiser Permanente, UCSF Health, and UCLA Health run structured onboarding programs for new attendings that include mentorship and gradual caseload buildup. Completing a California-based fellowship carries significant weight, and board eligibility along with a clean Medical Board of California license gives candidates a clear hiring edge over those still awaiting credentialing.
Where can I find and apply to medical oncologist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to medical oncologist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from health systems, cancer centers, and outpatient oncology groups across the state. Find roles that fit your specialty and location and apply directly to each employer.
