Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a primary care nurse practitioner in California?
You become a primary care nurse practitioner in California by completing an accredited graduate-level nurse practitioner program, passing a national certification exam through AANP or ANCC, and applying for both a nurse practitioner certificate and a furnishing license through the California Board of Registered Nursing. California requires a separate furnishing license to prescribe medications, which involves additional coursework and a clinical pharmacology exam. Most California employers also expect an active DEA registration before the first day.
How much do primary care nurse practitioners make in California?
Primary care nurse practitioners in California earn a median of about $168,520 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $120,340 for the lowest 10% to over $240,830 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire primary care nurse practitioners in California?
Employers hiring primary care nurse practitioners in California right now include Carbon Health, Welbe Health, and CommonSpirit Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated systems, federally qualified health centers, and multispecialty groups drive steady year-round openings, particularly for family medicine and adult-gerontology primary care roles.
Which California cities have the most primary care nurse practitioner jobs?
Novato, Redding, and San Francisco have the most primary care nurse practitioner openings in California right now. Los Angeles dominates by volume because of its large safety-net hospital network and federally qualified health centers, while the Bay Area's concentration of integrated systems like Kaiser Permanente and academic medical centers fuels consistent demand, and San Diego's growing population and military-adjacent health sector add further depth to the market.
Are there remote primary care nurse practitioner jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Primary care nurse practitioner work is fundamentally hands-on and patient-facing, so most roles require in-person presence. About 0% of primary care nurse practitioner openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are almost always telehealth-specific, covering chronic disease management, behavioral health integration, or urgent care triage rather than full primary care panels.
How can I get hired as a primary care nurse practitioner in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a nurse practitioner residency or fellowship program, and California has several of the strongest in the country, including programs run by Kaiser Permanente Northern and Southern California, Natividad Medical Center, and community health center networks affiliated with the California Primary Care Association. Applicants coming from roles such as registered nurse in outpatient or urgent care, or medical assistant supervisor, hold an advantage because California employers value primary care setting familiarity. Completing your California furnishing license and DEA registration before you apply removes a common hiring delay and signals readiness.
Where can I find and apply to primary care nurse practitioner jobs in California?
You can find and apply to primary care nurse practitioner jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring across the state. Find roles that fit your specialty, experience level, and preferred location, then apply directly to each one.
