Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a primary care nurse practitioner in New York?
You must earn a graduate nursing degree and then apply for licensure through the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions, which issues the Nurse Practitioner certificate required to practice in New York. You will also need to pass a national board certification exam from ANCC or AANP in your specialty area. New York additionally requires nurse practitioners to hold a collaborative practice agreement with a physician in most outpatient primary care settings, so securing that arrangement is a practical early step.
How much do primary care nurse practitioners make in New York?
Primary care nurse practitioners in New York earn a median of about $153,510 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $112,730 for the lowest 10% to over $198,060 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire primary care nurse practitioners in New York?
Employers hiring primary care nurse practitioners in New York right now include Medstaff, HarmonyCares, and Genesis Medical Health, PC, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's federally qualified health centers and large integrated systems like NYC Health + Hospitals and Northwell Health represent some of the most consistent sources of full-time openings across the state.
Which New York cities have the most primary care nurse practitioner jobs?
The cities with the most primary care nurse practitioner openings in New York are New York, Brooklyn, and Bronx. New York City dominates due to the sheer scale of its hospital systems, FQHCs, and community health networks, while Buffalo and Albany reflect strong regional medical centers and state-affiliated health institutions that maintain steady NP hiring outside the metro.
Are there remote primary care nurse practitioner jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Primary care nurse practitioner work is fundamentally hands-on, requiring in-person patient examination and procedures, which limits fully remote opportunities. About 8% of primary care nurse practitioner openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions tend to involve telehealth-only panels, chronic disease management follow-up visits, or administrative or utilization review roles rather than full-scope primary care practice.
How can I get hired as a primary care nurse practitioner in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate NP residency or fellowship programs, which several major New York employers offer specifically to bridge the gap from graduation to independent practice. NYC Health + Hospitals and Montefiore run structured NP transition-to-practice programs in primary care settings. Candidates coming from roles as registered nurses or certified nurse midwives often move into NP positions more readily, and holding your New York NP certificate with a collaborative agreement in place before you apply gives you a concrete hiring advantage.
Where can I find and apply to primary care nurse practitioner jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to primary care nurse practitioner jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring across the state. Find roles that fit your specialty, experience level, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that match.
