Registered Respiratory Therapist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a registered respiratory therapist in New York?
You must hold an active New York State respiratory therapist license, issued by the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions, which requires graduating from a CoARC-accredited program and passing the National Board for Respiratory Care exams leading to the Registered Respiratory Therapist credential. New York mandates both licensure and the RRT for independent clinical practice, so candidates who hold only the Certified Respiratory Therapist credential typically need to complete the advanced RRT exam before applying to most hospital positions in the state.
How much do registered respiratory therapists make in New York?
Registered respiratory therapists in New York earn a median of about $107,810 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $81,270 for the lowest 10% to over $131,500 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire registered respiratory therapists in New York?
Employers hiring registered respiratory therapists in New York right now include Massena Hospital, Newark Wayne Community Hospital, and Arnot Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large integrated health systems tend to post the highest volume of openings, particularly for ICU-based and neonatal respiratory therapy roles across their multi-campus networks.
Which New York cities have the most registered respiratory therapist jobs?
The cities with the most registered respiratory therapist openings in New York are Rochester, Amsterdam, and Elmira. New York City leads by a wide margin because of its concentration of major academic medical centers and Level I trauma hospitals, while Buffalo and Albany support steady demand through large regional health systems that serve the western and capital district populations respectively.
Are there remote registered respiratory therapist jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Respiratory therapy is a hands-on clinical role that requires direct patient contact for nearly all core duties, so fully remote positions are uncommon. About 0% of registered respiratory therapist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are typically limited to telehealth respiratory consultations, case management, or education and training coordination roles rather than direct bedside care.
How can I get hired as a registered respiratory therapist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate respiratory therapy positions at large New York City health systems like NewYork-Presbyterian or Northwell Health, both of which run structured new-grad onboarding programs for RRTs with limited clinical hours beyond clinical rotations. Candidates who completed their CoARC-accredited program at a New York institution often have an advantage because preceptorship connections carry weight at local hospitals. Holding your New York State license and RRT credential before applying, even without post-graduation experience, satisfies the baseline requirement for most entry-level postings.
Where can I find and apply to registered respiratory therapist jobs in New York?
