Child Therapist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a child therapist in New York?
You become a child therapist in New York by earning a master's degree in mental health counseling, clinical social work, or marriage and family therapy, then completing the supervised post-graduate hours required by the New York State Education Department before applying for licensure. The most common credential is the Licensed Mental Health Counselor or Licensed Clinical Social Worker, both issued by the New York State Office of the Professions. Passing the relevant national clinical exam is required before full licensure is granted.
How much do child therapists make in New York?
Child therapists in New York earn a median of about $64,430 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $50,380 for the lowest 10% to over $83,050 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire child therapists in New York?
Employers hiring child therapists in New York right now include Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services and Association to Benefit Children, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of nonprofit community mental health agencies, large hospital systems, and school-based health programs means hiring is sustained across a wide range of organization sizes and settings throughout the state.
Which New York cities have the most child therapist jobs?
The cities with the most child therapist openings in New York are Bronx, New York, and Staten Island. New York City drives the highest volume by far due to its concentration of hospital networks, nonprofit behavioral health organizations, and public school mental health initiatives, while Buffalo and Albany generate consistent demand through regional medical centers, community agencies, and state-funded children's service programs.
Are there remote child therapist jobs in New York?
Yes, but they are limited. Child therapy relies heavily on direct clinical interaction with young clients, which means fully remote positions make up a smaller share of openings than in many other fields. About 38% of child therapist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. The roles most likely to carry remote or hybrid flexibility are telehealth-designated positions at larger group practices or community mental health organizations.
How can I get hired as a child therapist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a pre-licensure or associate clinician position at a community mental health center or school-based health program, which are structured to provide the supervised hours required for New York State licensure. Large employers such as NYC Health + Hospitals and agencies within the New York City Department of Health regularly hire candidates who hold a master's degree and are accumulating supervised hours toward licensure. Adjacent roles such as case manager, behavioral health technician, or therapeutic staff support can also open doors into direct child therapy work while you build your clinical hours.
Where can I find and apply to child therapist jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to child therapist jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your credentials and preferred setting, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
