Child Therapist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a child therapist in Texas?
To become a licensed child therapist in Texas, you must earn a master's degree in a qualifying field such as counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy, then accumulate supervised post-graduate hours and pass a licensure exam through the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors, the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners, or the Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists, depending on your discipline.
How much do child therapists make in Texas?
Child therapists in Texas earn a median of about $46,300 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $36,700 for the lowest 10% to over $93,500 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire child therapists in Texas?
Employers hiring child therapists in Texas right now include Action Behavior Centers - ABA Therapy for Autism, Thriveworks, and CHRISTUS Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Texas's large integrated health systems, community mental health centers funded through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, and school districts contracting with private behavioral health groups are among the most consistent sources of openings statewide.
Which Texas cities have the most child therapist jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio have the most child therapist openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth drive the largest share of demand through their major pediatric hospital systems, community mental health centers, and large school districts, while San Antonio's military-connected population and federally qualified health centers sustain strong and steady hiring for trauma-specialized and bilingual clinicians.
Are there remote child therapist jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields because direct therapeutic work with children often requires in-person sessions, especially for younger clients and trauma-focused modalities. About 50% of child therapist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of August 2026. Telehealth roles are most available for licensed clinicians serving adolescents, rural Texas communities with provider shortages, and school-based consultation work.
How can I get hired as a child therapist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is pursuing an associate or intern position while completing your supervised hours toward Texas licensure. Large Texas employers such as Texas Children's Hospital, the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute partner clinics, and Integral Care in Austin regularly take on pre-licensed clinicians in structured supervision programs. Lateral entry from roles such as behavioral health technician, case manager, or school counselor aide is also common, and holding a BCBA credential or documented play therapy training noticeably strengthens early applications.
Where can I find and apply to child therapist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to child therapist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across hospitals, community mental health centers, private practices, and school-based programs. Find the roles that fit your license level and specialization and apply directly to each one.
