Child Therapist Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a child therapist in Massachusetts?
To become a licensed child therapist in Massachusetts, you must earn a qualifying master's or doctoral degree in counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, or psychology, then apply to the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions for the credential that matches your training, typically the LMHC, LCSW, or LMFT. Each license requires supervised post-graduate clinical hours and a passing score on the relevant licensure exam before you can practice independently.
How much do child therapists make in Massachusetts?
Child therapists in Massachusetts earn a median of about $67,370 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $49,070 for the lowest 10% to over $128,490 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire child therapists in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring child therapists in Massachusetts right now include LifeStance Health, Ellie Mental Health, and Healing WELL, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Massachusetts has a dense network of community mental health agencies, pediatric hospital systems, and school-based behavioral health programs that maintain consistent year-round openings for licensed and pre-licensed clinicians.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most child therapist jobs?
Boston, Easton, and Newton are the Massachusetts cities with the most child therapist openings. Boston drives the largest share of demand through its concentration of academic medical centers, children's hospitals, and community health organizations, while Worcester and Springfield reflect strong regional mental health agency networks and school-based programs that serve high-need populations throughout central and western Massachusetts.
Are there remote child therapist jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, but they are more limited than in purely desk-based fields because child therapy often involves direct, in-person clinical work and school or community settings. About 88% of child therapist openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting real but selective demand. Telehealth roles for outpatient talk therapy with older children and adolescents are the segment most likely to be offered remotely.
How can I get hired as a child therapist in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a clinician or counselor position at a Massachusetts community mental health center while still completing your supervised licensure hours, since many agencies, including those within the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership network, hire pre-licensed master's-level candidates. Roles such as mental health counselor, case manager, or therapeutic mentor in school-based programs are common stepping stones. Completing a field placement or internship with a recognized Massachusetts provider and pursuing your LMHC or LCSW registration early gives you a clear edge over candidates who wait until graduation.
Where can I find and apply to child therapist jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to child therapist jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current Massachusetts openings from employers actively hiring right now. Search the listings, find roles that fit your license level, specialty, and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that match.
