Child Therapist Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a child therapist in Pennsylvania?
Becoming a child therapist in Pennsylvania requires a master's degree in counseling, social work, or a related clinical field followed by licensure through the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors. Most clinicians pursue either the Licensed Professional Counselor or Licensed Clinical Social Worker credential, each requiring supervised post-graduate hours and a board-approved examination. Pennsylvania also mandates Act clearances for anyone working with children in the state.
How much do child therapists make in Pennsylvania?
Child therapists in Pennsylvania earn a median of about $66,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,050 for the lowest 10% to over $91,980 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire child therapists in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring child therapists in Pennsylvania right now include Blackbird Health, Elevated Kids, and LifeStance Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pennsylvania's dense network of community behavioral health organizations, large academic health systems, and county-funded mental health programs means ongoing openings exist well beyond the largest cities.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most child therapist jobs?
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Newtown lead Pennsylvania for child therapist openings. Philadelphia's concentration of pediatric health systems and community mental health centers drives the highest volume, Pittsburgh's major academic medical centers and behavioral health networks account for a large secondary share, and Harrisburg's role as the state capital brings together government-contracted providers and school-based mental health programs that sustain consistent demand.
Are there remote child therapist jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, but they are more limited than in fully desk-based fields because direct clinical work with children often requires in-person contact. About 57% of child therapist openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and the roles most likely to offer telehealth flexibility are those serving adolescents for individual talk therapy rather than play therapy, early intervention, or school-based services.
How can I get hired as a child therapist in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a licensed-associate or clinical trainee position while completing your supervised hours toward full licensure. Large Pennsylvania employers such as UPMC Behavioral Health and Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health routinely hire provisionally licensed clinicians and pair them with supervision toward LPC or LCSW status. Candidates coming from adjacent roles such as case manager, behavior health technician, or school counseling intern gain a clear advantage, and completing Act clearances before applying removes a common delay.
Where can I find and apply to child therapist jobs in Pennsylvania?
You can find and apply to child therapist jobs in Pennsylvania on Migrate Mate, which lists current Pennsylvania openings across clinical settings, school districts, and behavioral health organizations throughout the state. Search the listings, find the roles that fit your license level and specialty, and apply directly to the employer.
