Registered Nurse Med Surg Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a registered nurse med surg in Texas?
You become a registered nurse in Texas by completing an accredited associate or bachelor's degree in nursing, then passing the NCLEX-RN examination and applying for licensure through the Texas Board of Nursing. Texas participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so nurses licensed in other compact states can practice in Texas without a separate application. From there, employers typically hire new graduates directly into med-surg units and provide unit-specific orientation.
How much do registered nurse med surgs make in Texas?
Registered nurse med surgs in Texas earn a median of about $95,970 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $67,120 for the lowest 10% to over $127,950 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire registered nurse med surgs in Texas?
Employers hiring registered nurse med surgs in Texas right now include Medical City Healthcare, Baylor Scott & White Health, and St. David's HealthCare, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Texas's concentration of large integrated health systems and Level I trauma centers means registered nurse med surg openings appear across both urban flagship hospitals and suburban community campuses.
Which Texas cities have the most registered nurse med surg jobs?
Fort Worth, Houston, and Austin have the most registered nurse med surg openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth drive the largest share because both metros anchor major multi-hospital systems with high patient volumes, while San Antonio's strong military and veteran healthcare infrastructure keeps demand steady across its medical center and surrounding facilities.
Are there remote registered nurse med surg jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Registered nurse med surg work is fundamentally hands-on and bedside, so the vast majority of roles require in-person presence on the unit. About 0% of registered nurse med surg openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions typically cover utilization review, care coordination, or discharge planning functions rather than direct floor nursing.
How can I get hired as a registered nurse med surg in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new graduate residency program, which large Texas systems including Baylor Scott & White Health, HCA Houston Healthcare, and UT Health run specifically for nurses without acute care experience. These structured programs place residents on med-surg units with preceptor support for several months before independent practice. Candidates with clinical rotations completed in Texas hospitals, an active Texas Board of Nursing license, and BLS certification are competitive for these cohort openings.
Where can I find and apply to registered nurse med surg jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to registered nurse med surg jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to Texas employers. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
