Registered Nurse Med Surg Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a registered nurse med surg in California?
You must hold an active California Registered Nurse license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing, which requires completing an accredited nursing program and passing the NCLEX-RN. Most California hospitals hiring for med-surg floors accept candidates with an Associate Degree in Nursing, though many large systems prefer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Once licensed, med-surg is typically an entry-level acute-care specialization available to new graduates.
How much do registered nurse med surgs make in California?
Registered nurse med surgs in California earn a median of about $140,270 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $101,260 for the lowest 10% to over $213,320 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire registered nurse med surgs in California?
Employers hiring registered nurse med surgs in California right now include AHMC Healthcare, CENTSTONE SERVICES, and Community Health System, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated systems and county-operated hospitals tend to post the most consistent med-surg openings year-round.
Which California cities have the most registered nurse med surg jobs?
Monterey Park, Arcata, and Fresno have the most registered nurse med surg openings in California, driven by the density of major acute-care hospitals and health system campuses concentrated in those metros, with smaller markets benefiting from the regional footprint of systems like Kaiser Permanente and Dignity Health, which operate facilities well beyond the largest urban centers.
Are there remote registered nurse med surg jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Registered nurse med surg work is fundamentally hands-on and bedside, so fully remote positions represent a very small share of total openings. About 0% of registered nurse med surg openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be care coordination or case management roles that draw on med-surg clinical backgrounds rather than direct floor nursing.
How can I get hired as a registered nurse med surg in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is applying to a new graduate nurse residency program, which most large California health systems run specifically for nurses without acute-care experience. Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, and UC Health all operate structured residency and transition-to-practice programs at California facilities. Candidates who secure a California RN license early, complete a med-surg clinical rotation during their nursing program, and hold a current BLS certification are consistently prioritized. Roles such as patient care technician or licensed vocational nurse at a California hospital also provide a common internal stepping stone into a staff RN position.
Where can I find and apply to registered nurse med surg jobs in California?
You can find and apply to registered nurse med surg jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
