Physician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a physician in California?
To practice as a physician in California you must hold a license issued by the Medical Board of California, which requires graduating from an accredited medical school, completing an approved residency, and passing all three steps of the USMCA or COMLEX. After submitting your application to the Medical Board, you must also obtain a California Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System registration before prescribing controlled medications.
Which companies hire physicians in California?
Employers hiring physicians in California right now include Sutter Health, TeamHealth, and Carbon Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's size and density of academic medical centers, integrated health systems, and federally qualified community health centers mean that physician hiring is active across a wide range of specialties and practice settings throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most physician jobs?
Los Angeles, Sacramento, and San Francisco account for the most physician openings in California, driven by the concentration of major academic health systems, large integrated networks, and high patient population density in those metros. Smaller cities in the list often appear because a flagship regional medical center or a major employer's satellite campus anchors physician hiring in that area.
Are there remote physician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 16% of physician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most clinical roles. The physician positions most likely to carry remote or hybrid components are telehealth primary care, utilization management, and medical director roles that focus on chart review and care coordination rather than direct patient examination.
How can I get hired as a physician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path for a newly licensed physician is applying to a residency-to-staff pipeline at a large California health system, where Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, and the UC Health network regularly onboard new attendings directly from their own affiliated training programs. Applicants without prior attending experience should target hospitalist and urgent care roles, which large California groups such as TeamHealth and Sound Physicians staff heavily and structure for new graduates. Board eligibility, a clean Medical Board of California license, and a strong residency reference are the credentials that open these doors fastest.
Where can I find and apply to physician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to physician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across health systems, multispecialty groups, and community health centers. Find roles that fit your specialty and practice preferences and apply directly from each listing.
