Physician Jobs in San Diego: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a physician job in San Diego?
San Diego's physician market is driven by its large academic health system, a dense network of federally qualified health centers, and a substantial military and veterans' healthcare sector. Candidates with experience in primary care, hospitalist medicine, or high-demand specialties like psychiatry and emergency medicine have the clearest path. Targeting health centers in City Heights or National City, or the VA San Diego Healthcare System, gives you a foothold that pure private-practice markets don't.
Which companies hire physicians in San Diego?
Companies currently hiring physicians in San Diego include Perlman Clinic, Spectrum Healthcare Resources, and Rady Children's Hospital, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. San Diego's hiring base is anchored by large academic health systems, integrated multi-specialty groups, and community health organizations that serve the region's diverse urban and border-area populations.
Are there remote physician jobs in San Diego?
Yes, though remote physician work is limited by nature since most roles require direct patient contact. About 23% of physician openings tied to San Diego are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, primarily in telehealth, utilization review, and physician advisory roles. San Diego's strong health-tech presence near Torrey Pines and Sorrento Valley supports more of these analytical and telehealth positions than most markets.
How can I get a physician job in San Diego with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path for early-career physicians in San Diego is through residency-affiliated programs at UC San Diego Health or Sharp Healthcare, which routinely convert residents and fellows into attending roles. Federally qualified health centers in Southeastern San Diego and the City Heights corridor actively recruit new graduates, particularly for primary care and family medicine. Completing rotations or a fellowship at a San Diego institution is the single strongest local differentiator.
Which industries hire the most physicians in San Diego?
Most physician openings in San Diego sit in Healthcare & Medical Services and Staffing & Recruiting, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. San Diego's combination of a major research university health system, a large active-duty and veteran population, and a growing biotech corridor makes it one of the more diversified physician hiring markets on the West Coast.
